Liverpool have completed the signing of Lazar Markovic after he signed a “long-term” deal with the club.
The Reds have been busy in this transfer window. They’ve signed Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana from Southampton and Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen. Markovic became the Merseyside club’s fourth signing of the summer. It is understood that his transfer fee is in the region of A?20million
Markovic was delighted joining last season’s runners up. He told the club’s official site, “I am very happy that I have joined such a great club.Ai??I hope that I will fulfil the expectations of the supporters, coaches, players and all connected to the club. I have seen what the players are like, I have seen what the supporters are like, and I cannot wait to start playing here.”
He added, “The Premier League is the strongest league in the world, and so I am very happy to be here.”
In the detailed interview with the website, Markovic was asked who he was most keen on teaming up with. He answered, “I could not favour any one of them. They are all equally good…but maybe the captain, Gerrard, as he is the team’s leader.
Brendan Rodgers had stated before the transfer window opened, that he wanted to bring in ‘multi-dimensional’ players at the club. Clearly, the Northern Irishman was happy he was able to get Markovic, who can operate anywhere in the attack- on either flanks, as a Number. 10 and as a centre forward.
“This is an exciting signing for us and one that improves our squad, in terms of attacking options, for the coming season”, said the Liverpool boss
“He was hugely impressive for Benfica last season and has proved he has the ability to produce the goods in European competition as well, which will be important for us.Ai??Lazar is flexible to play a number of positions, but I like the way he attacks games and is always positive and looking to make something happen. He will fit in with the way we play at Liverpool.
“Getting him at such a young age is also very pleasing for us, because we will be able to work with him to develop his talent within our group and improve him even further.Ai??He is the sort of character who is hungry to get better and progress; this is what we look for in players.”
A highly rated attacker, he is affectionately called ai???The Butterflyai??i?? because he is very light footed and it often seems that he is gliding along with the ball. He would make the attack of Liverpool more dangerous as he can directly sit in the starting 11, but would prove further beneficial in competing with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho for the starting spot. He brings a lot with him to the Liverpool team returning to Champions League and needing quality and depth in the squad- with or without Suarez- and Markovic is a great deal for the club. It would be interesting to see how he contributes to the team’s campaign next season.
