It was the same old story for Liverpool FC in their opener against Southampton as they showed glimpses of last season with a good first half followed by a nervy second.
The major talking points before, after, and during the opening game against Southampton was how Liverpool would cope without Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan will never be replaced and there were at times, during the game when you felt Suarez`s presence was the need of the hour to lift Liverpool. But, the Reds have to move on and look to do well with new recruits and possibly not make the same mistakes they made last season.
Recurring mistakes from last season
It is probably too early to scrutinize Rodgers` tactics and his team`s performance from just the Southampton game but one canai??i??t help but feel that his team are repeating the mistakes which cost them the title last season. Their attitude, especially in the second half has been lackadaisical to be brutally honest, and it is just baffling to see how Liverpool`s players fritter away an advantage by looking to hold on to it rather than building on it.
Holding on to a slender lead can be a catalyst to many problems with a nervy defence and an even shaky system as Liverpool found out on Saturday. Sure, Liverpool have purchased the likes of Lovren, Manquillo and Moreno to add more steel to the defence but even they will not be able to stop the flow of goals with an attitude of last Sunday.Overcomplicating things at the back has also been a common theme from last season to the pre season as well as the opener against Southampton. Simon Mignolet did made a terrific save to deny Schneiderlin`s effort and Southampton from getting a point but the Belgian has to be been guilty of putting his central defenders under pressure by playing short passes instead of clearing it and not to forget, his distribution has been really poor.
Shoddy Defending: Blame the system or Blame the players?
Shoddy defending (Liverpool shipped in 51 goals) was the primary reason why Liverpool werenai??i??t able to win the league last season. Some would blame the ultra attacking system set up by Rodgers while others would blame the back four and the goal keeper for those sloppy errors but the reality is a combination of both as well as Liverpool not being able to defend as a team.
Liverpool never really defended as a team last season and also during the Southampton game. A perfect football formation or system is all about getting the player distances correct so that all the outfield players get a clean shot at influencing the game. One can draw numerous analogies of poor defending by the whole team from last season`s games and this season`s opener against Southampton.
The game against Southampton was a classic example of ai???not defending as a teamai??i??. It was of no use slating the defenders when there were huge gaps between midfield and defence. The midfield had to take the blame as well. Debutant Javi Manquillo must have had the fright of his life when he had three Southampton players closing him down with no support whatsoever.
Henderson was still tracking back from up the pitch and Lucas was just ball watching for most of the game. The signings of Lovren, Manquillo and Moreno will surely improve the defence, but even they canai??i??t help Liverpool`s cause of not conceding goals if the midfielders get carried away by ai???attackingai??i?? too much. Ai??The likes of Gerrard and Lucas simply did not help out the defense against Southampton and unless they do not help their fellow defenders, we are going to see many goals at the back of the Liverpool net this season.
The Solution
A solid defensive midfielder, one who reads the game through his positioning , one who has
the energy to restrict the opposition from passing and makes vital interceptions ai??i?? a destroyer. Liverpool lack a quality defensive midfielder like a Matic or a Fernando to play the ugly game. Lucas Leiva played the defensive midfield role against Southampton and he was far from convincing. Injuries have taken a toll on the Brazilian and he found it very tough to link up with Gerrard, who was playing a similar role, to stifle the Southampton midfield. Emre Can, who impressed in pre-season, Ai??looks to be the solution and he has the legs to motor up and down the pitch and help out Gerrard and his defenders when the opposition switch to attack.
It is safe to say that the 4-2-3-1 employed by Rogers against the Saints with Lucas and Gerrard playing as holding midfielders, never really worked out and the introduction of Joe Allen and Rickie Lambert and a subsequent change into the diamond eventually won the game for Rodgers. Ai??Playing two strikers upfront has been the holy grail for the Reds in the last season or so and we could be in for a Balotelli-Sturridge combination with the Italian strongly linked the Reds. With the diamond formation working out exceedingly well for the Rodgers, the Northern Irishman would be more than happy to use it time and again to extract the best from his attacking players. The back four sort of picks itself with Manquillo, Skrtel, Lovren and Moreno making the cut and a midfield of Gerrard, Henderson and Can feeding Coutinho or Lallana who would be playing at the tip of the diamond supporting the two strikers. It would be interesting to see how the Reds line up at the Etihad.
