Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that the club has done everything to retain Luis Suarez, but the striker was desperate to play for Barcelona.
After days of conjectures, Liverpool finally confirmed that a deal has been agreed up with the Barcelona for the transfer of Luis Suarez last week. Brendan Rodgers has now insisted that the club did everything within their power to retain Suarez, who was desperate to leave.
Suarez, who joined Liverpool from Ajax in 2010, has become a fan favourite due to his outstanding performances and consistency on the pitch over the last two seasons. The 27-year-old scored an incredible 31 goals in 33 appearances for the Merseyside club last season as he spearheaded the club towards an incredible title challenge, which eventually fell short and they finished second behind Manchester City.
Suarez was in the middle of a transfer saga last summer as well when Arsenal were interested in signing him, but Liverpool eventually managed to keep hold of their talisman last season. But they could do nothing this time around as Barcelona came snooping in after enduring a disappointing season in La Liga.
Brendan Rodgers has now revealed that Suarez was desperate to move to Spain, but believes that they great service out of him during his stint at the club.
“We did everything we could as a club to keep Luis.
“He wanted to go and play in Spain, and unfortunately when a player no longer wants to play for you, we need as a club to look at it.
“It was his decision for him to go, he’s gone to Barcelona, a club he wanted to play for and now we’ll move on.
“I’m not sure if he would have gone regardless of the World Cup. But I never felt that towards the end of the season, and likewise he never said he would give us another year either. He had obviously signed a new deal so we had that.
“But I think we have had great service out of Luis and it’s one that we can’t worry too much about now, it’s done, it’s gone and our focus is here.
“There is a lot of work going on with the recruitment team in terms of getting in the right player and I am sure we can identify that.
