Liverpool FC are set to sign Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa from Malaga after reportedly agreeing to meet his A?5million asking price.
Liverpool’s defensive woes have been a huge part of the problem at the Merseyside club this season. Simon Mignolet’s form has been far from top-class and Brendan Rodgers is understandably looking at options to add in the winter.
The Reds had been in for Victor Valdes and the free agent was reportedly inches away from a move to Liverpool. However, he was picked up by rivals Manchester United who gave him a chance to train with them and get back to fitness. It was reported that Rodgers wanted the player to prove his fitness first and only then would he sign him.
Liverpool have also been linked with Fiorentian’s Neto, who will be offered a new deal but the Brazil Under-23s stopper is apparently stalling on it and will be a free agent at the end of this season.
However, the switch has not done him any good so far, as the player has not featured for the Spanish side even once in the league. Reports suggestAi??thatAi??Liverpool are now planning to sign the 29 year old in the winter.
Brendan Rodgers wants to add another keeper to his ranks to add further competition for first-choice Simon Mignolet, if not replace him and it seems that the A?5million rated Ochoa is that player.
THT VERDICT
Liverpool do in fact need another keeper urgently. Not only is Brad Jones not a good enough alternative, in the absence of Mignolet in big matches, Mignolet himself has been extremely sub-par this season between the sticks. The only good game he has had has been against Real Madrid on Tuesday where he made 8 excellent saves. While Rodgers would hope that this is a start to a run of good games, a quality keeper needs to be added to provide the Belgian with competition and remove complacency from the club. Ochoa had a terrific world cup where he caught the eye of everyone, particularly as Mexico kept an unlikely clean sheet against hosts Brazil. But the lack of action after the switch to Malaga makes one question whether he has been that good in recent times. Liverpool have been linked with Valdes and Casillas in the recent past as well. Rodgers needs to add quality players in the side and it is difficult to predict if Ochoa would be an upgrade on Jones or on Mignolet. At present, the latter is needed. As for the reports of agreement between the two sides, this could easily be false as we are still a month and a half away from the winter transfer window and this is usually the time when most rumors begin.
