The current Premier League Season has been a rebirth of sorts for Liverpool. Not only the team, but also the players have seen an incredible transformation in their fortunes. TheHardTackle takes a look at one such player, Joe Allen.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been nothing short of a revelation this season.Ai?? The Northern Irishman has been spot on with his tactics and decision making so far this term, which has been the major factor for Liverpool`s scintillating performances. Rodgers has showcased his amazing ability of getting the best out of his playerai??i??s right from his Reading days and it comes as no surprise that he has totally transformed the careers of Jordan Henderson, Jon Flanagan and more recently Joe Allen.
First season blues for Joe Allen
After a super first season with Swansea in the premier league, where everyone was awed with his ball retention and passing skills, Allen made the move to Merseyside, following his manager Brendan Rodgers.Ai?? After putting in some good performances in his first few games for the Reds, the Welshman`s form dipped due to injuries and loss of confidence. The misconception that ai???Gerrard and Allen playing together midfield will never workai??? led to question marks about Allen`s future this season, but after his latest comeback into the first team, coming on as a substitute against Swansea and performing well Ai??in the away games against Southampton and United, Ai??Allen has nothing short of remarkable for the Reds.
Ai??Important part of Rodgers` midfield
Joe Allen is not the kind of player who will bully players in midfield or make crunching tackles. He is an intelligent player who is aware of his surroundings. The Welshman`s low centre of gravity and short stature gives him the edge in retaining the possession of the ball. He is not as pacy as a 100m sprinter, but he can still break quickly on the counter and his ability to change direction, to stop almost immediately at high pace makes him very hard for defenders to get near to without fouling him. And he manages to cover the ball very well with his body when he has got someone on his back.
Liverpool`s victory against Swansea at the end of February was thrilling, but the midfield of Gerrard, Henderson and Coutinho was exposed for most of the game until Allen came on. The Welshman acted as a cohesive force in the second half against Swansea and was instrumental in keeping the midfield together for most of the second half. He was tactically adept when it came to defending and was instrumental in to forcing the Swansea midfield into playing the ball in less dangerous areas of the pitch, often even making them pass the ball back to defence. He made the difference between Liverpool holding on and conceding a goal against his former club.
Ai??The game against Southampton saw Rodgers experiment with the diamond in midfield. Liverpool started with Gerrard playing at the bottom of the diamond, Allen on the left hand side and Henderson on the right, with Coutinho supporting the ai???SASai??i?? on the top of the diamond. Southampton began the game brightly with their wingers exploiting the diamond by putting in as much crosses as possible. The Liverpool full backs were occupied for much of the game with Adam Lallana cutting inside from the left, and Rickie Lambert playing between the lines to support Jay Rodriguez, who started upfront. With Henderson and Allen playing as the shuttlers in the diamond, Ai??Lallana and Lambert positioned themselves on either side of Gerrard, and Southampton cut through Liverpool`s midfield like a knife through butter.
Sterling`s introduction in the second half induced some pace and he adjusted well on the top of the diamond closing down the Southampton midfield rather quickly and Liverpool settled into the game, ultimately coming away with a comfortable 3-0 win.Ai?? Liverpool were probably more suited to Sterling playing at the tip of the diamond for this formation to work and Rodgers did just that in the game against United.
The game against United at Old Trafford was an example of Liverpool`s midfield efficiency. Rodgers played Sterling at the tip of the diamond aided by Henderson and Allen in midfield. Allen, in particular was very impressive for the Reds. The Welshman played with great intensity and his constant pressing of the ball was reminiscent of his Swansea days where he made a name for himself. He was dynamic in midfield, always making himself available for passes, and he did a jolly good job of tracking Mata and Januzaj.
Another impressive part in his game was, he never dallied on the ball far too long and he hardly got into a situation where he was rushed into making a pass. Ai??He was always aware of what was around him and his positioning was impeccable.

He was more than happy to help out Jon Flanagan at left back and their contributions were vital in Liverpool winning at Old Trafford in five years. All in all, it is safe to say that Joe Allen is back to his best and his improved form augurs well for Liverpool in their title challenge.
Scope for improvement
Joe Allen`s Achilles heel at the moment has to be his finishing capability. The glaring miss against Everton and the fact that he hasnai??i??t opened his account in the premier league for Liverpool so far shows his shyness in front of goal. He has to be more decisive and try to create more chances and goal scoring opportunities in the final third of the pitch. The game against United showed encouraging signs, (where he made his way into the opposition box and won a penalty off Jones) and if he continues to work on his contribution in the final third of the pitch, then the ai???Welsh Xaviai??i?? would surely do more justice to his nickname.
