The rivalry between LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes is known as the California ClA?sico for its history and intensity.
For years, LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes have clashed on the pitch in a game known as the California ClA?sico. Rivalries between professional teams have that singular, distinct and an unforgettable appeal and this rivalry is no different either. In the MLS, hereai??i??s no other rivalry quite like this one. Sure, the Seattle Sounders-Portland Timbers rivalry is intense and passionate. But it doesnai??i??t have much appeal outside the Pacific Northwest.
The LA Galaxy- San Jose Earthquakes rivalry has plenty of history. These teams were two of the ten charter members of MLS and since 1996, except for two years when the Earthquakes were on a hiatus from the MLS due to failure to secure a soccer-specific stadium, have shared what is considered the oldest rivalry in MLS.
Sporting rivalries are usually a manifestation of deeper and broader differences between the rival teams. Similarly, the California ClA?sico is about more than just soccer. San Jose and Los Angeles are more often than not seen as divided by cultural and political differences. Although unified as a single state, Northern California and Southern California have a notorious rivalry. Southern California represented by LA has been historically more conservative while Northern California represented by San Jose has been more liberal. Conservatives even disparagingly use the term ai???San Francisco valuesai??i?? to refer to the more outgoing, liberal and pluralist culture of Northern California. Not surprisingly these differences manifest prominently in the stateai??i??s professional sports with intense rivalries between opposing teams. Situated in the two big population centers of the state of California, LA and San Jose too readily joined a litany of Northern and Southern California rivalries.
The relative proximity between the cities (360 miles) makes it convenient for rival fans to attend each otherai??i??s home games. And expectedly, there is bitter rivalry between the 1906 Ultras who support San Jose and Angel City Brigade who support Los Angeles. It is not uncommon to see fans from these opposing groups taunt each other with extravagant tifo displays that rival even those seen in Europe or South America and hostile chants. This intense resentment is what sets soccer apart from the other sports and the loyalty, energy and unwavering support of these groups goes beyond superficial consumer fandom.
Although the rivalry between the teams has not prevented players from switching teams, Landon Donovanai??i??s transfer from San Jose to Los Angeles still rankles Quakes fans. Landon Donovan is widely considered as the best male player to ever come out of the United States and has won the US Soccer Athlete of the Year award a record four times. For four seasons, he plied his trade at the San Jose Earthquakes on loan from his parent club Bayer Leverkusen. After his loan had ended, much to the chagrin of the Quakes fans, Donovan returned to play for their bitter rivals, the LA Galaxy. Donovan continues to be given a hostile reception even today when the two teams face-off and he is often referred to as the ai???American Figoai??i??.
Over the course of this rivalry, LA Galaxy have Ai??had the better record winning 31 out of a total of 69 games played. San Jose on the other had have won 21 times with 17 matches being tied. When it comes to silverware, LA have 11 major domestic titles to San Joseai??i??s 4. And in terms of financial strength, LA are head and shoulders above their fierce rival. They were the first team in the MLS to turn in a profit while San Jose still make losses. LA Galaxy have the highest annual revenue of any MLS team and the seventh highest revenue of any team in the Americas. The Quakes meanwhile donai??i??t even have a jersey sponsor.
In the recent past, the Quakes’ 4-3 win over LA in late June of 2012 was an unforgettable game. Playing in front of sold-out crowd of over 50,000 at the Stanford stadium, the teams dished out what was referred to as one of the best games in MLS history. It had everything: 7 goals, numerous lead changes, refereeing controversy, a magnificent David Beckham free kick and even a fracas between the players in the end. San Jose quickly took a 1-0 lead and LAai??i??s riposte was both telling and devastating. Beckham scored a stunning free-kick to equalize and LA scored two more goals in quick succession with Landon Donovan adding the third. As the first half neared completion, it looked like the Galaxy would make it four wins in succession. But defender Victor BernA?rdez scored what was his first MLS goal in the 44th minute to give San Jose faint hope. Just two minutes after the game restarted, Sam Cronin equalized and the 50,000 strong crowds erupted in joy. The comeback was complete in the 61st minute when United States striker Chris Wondolowski broke free of his marker and adroitly scored. Led by Beckham, LA mounted a spirited but forlorn fight back and the game finished 4-3 in favor of the Quakes. David Beckham had been snubbed from the British Olympic team and his performance that day presented a gamut of his skills: a curling trademark free-kick, pin-point long passes, hitting the injured Sam Cronin with a 30-yard pass, fighting with opposing players and finally scuffling with the San Jose mascot.
The Earthquakes are currently languishing second from bottom in the Western Conference MLS standings. They had hoped to get things moving in the right direction after the World Cup break but havenai??i??t been able to put in a string of consistent performances only winning 2 of the 6 matches since. With the likes of Robbie Keane (who currently captains them) and Landon Donovan in their ranks, LA Galaxy on the other hand have won 5 of the last 6 matches and are on track to qualifying for the play-offs. So are LA Galaxy the firm favorites? Unequivocally no, come August 8th 2014 when the teams meet at the StubHub Center on the campus of California State University and all bets are off.
Itai??i??s no exaggeration to suggest that sport thrives on rivalries. As soccer continues to aggressively grow in the United States, it is vitally important that the rivalries between teams increase and strengthen. Soccer flourishes on the passion of fans and this rivalry is precisely what the MLS needs to help raise its profile.
