Jose Mourinho has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson knew he wanted to return to Chelsea
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that ex-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson knew from last season that he intended to return to Stamford Bridge at the start of the campaign for the Blues and for his second stint as the man in charge of the London club.
Mourinho responded to the questions answered as to why he didn’t take the United job after Sir Alex announced his retirement from the position last May:
‘I spoke with Sir Alex when my Real Madrid team knocked United out of the Champions League last season and I told him what I wanted to do – that Chelsea is what I wanted. That was the direction I wanted to go.
‘Everyone knew Benitez was not going to stay, everyone knew my relationship with the club and it was an opportunity I didn’t want to lose.Ai??So I don’t know if Sir Alex thought of me for United or not – that’s not the point. The point is he knew clearly that I wanted to go to Chelsea.’
The man appointed by the United legend, David Moyes, has had a heavily disappointing campaign as the 20 times league winners find themselves in the seventh position, behind Tottenham and Moyes’s ex-club Everton. They have also been knocked out of both the domestic cups. The only saving grace for the Red Devils is the fact that they’re still progressing in the Champions League. However, facing Bayern Munich- current CL holders and winners of the Bundesliga 13-14- in the quarter finals and coming out with a win would be a huge task for the Manchester team and no one really expects them to provide an upset in this clash.
In a complete reverse scenario, Jose Mourinho has enjoyed a fruitful second start at Cheslea as the west London club currently lead the league table, 18 points ahead of the Red Devils. The Blues face Laurent Blanc’s Paris St Germain in the quarter finals of the Champions League. Mourinho’s men genuinely stand a chance of winning their second Champions League trophy after a gap of a year. Chelsea are also considered Premier League favorites along with Manchester City.
A lot of people have questioned the appointment of David Moyes as manager of the club which always found itself in the top 4 spots in the last two decades. Manchester United faithful, who worship Sir Alex Ferguson, have even started hurling abuses at their idol after a very under-par season as he is the man who appointed Moyes as the person who would lead the 20 times League winners. Moyes, who was in-charge of Everton and made them a respectable mid-table side has had no problem in transforming Manchester United into one too.
United supporters have continuously wondered why Mourinho was not given the job of leading the club. The comments made by the Portuguese would settle these curiosities.
