Jose Mourinho hailed his Chelsea side as ai???Champions of Autumnai??? after sealing a victory at Anfield to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League.
Chelsea went a goal down early at Anfield, but rallied back through Gary Cahill and Diego Costa to clinch the three points that they deserved. Although Liverpool dominated the proceedings early on, Chelsea ended the half as the stronger team, and upped the ante in the second half to ensure a satisfactory result for themselves, the manager and the travelling fans.
“All we can say is that we are the champions of autumn,” said Mourinho.
“I think we have a very good chance to win the title but I think we, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Southampton are all still in the race.”
Mourinho hailed his sideai??i??s performance, and was pleased with the fact that the team did not settle for a point at 1-1 and instead went for the win.
“We are in a good situation, I am very happy to be where we are in the league after playing our four games in Liverpool and Manchester already, but there is still a long way to go. The best team won today, I donai??i??t think anyone can say we did not deserve the points, and I thought the way we played was fantastic, especially in the second half when the scores were level.
“Just about every team would accept a draw and a point as a good result at Anfield, but mine wouldnai??i??t. They showed great ambition and confidence in looking for the win.”
Mourinho singled out Ramires and Fabregas for their special performance, and also highlighted the work done by his medical department to ensure both players were fit to play despite carrying slight niggles.
“Special word to Ramires and Fabregas, also to the medical department.Ai?? They did fantastic work on them, they were fantastic to try to resist their problem.
“Fabregas is now a doubt for the next match, because he gambled everything on a hamstring problem, but the medical department took the risk with me, and I am really pleased with their performance.”
“Fabregas and Ramires, they are examples of what my team is at the moment ai??i?? everyone sticking together and working well.”
Liverpool had a late penalty call when a Steven Gerrard shot hit Gary Cahill on the left arm, but Mourinho refused to get drawn into the discussion about the decision.
“Penalty? Too far for me, I donai??i??t know. But the victory was well-deserved. The merit, quality, class, attitude shown by my team was fantastic.”
With his side still unbeaten in all competitions, many are expecting Chelsea to go through the entire season unbeaten.
But Mourinho chose to ease the pressure on his team, saying it would be near impossible to go a full season without defeat.
“Unbeaten through the season is the impossible job, I think we will lose,” he added.Ai??In modern football, especially in the Premier League, I don’t believe in an unbeaten run.
