Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet , the legendary Juventus pair, will meet again on the field as both have signed up for the inaugural Indian Super League with Delhi and Pune respectively. While they wonai??i??t be teammates, still seeing both of them in action at the same time will bring back some wonderful memories especially for the Juventus fans who have long admired the quality of these two brilliant professionals.
Del Piero and Trezeguet combined to score more than 200 goals together in the 12 years they spent together at Juventus. We take a look back at some of the memorable moments conjured up by them while representing the Old Lady. There were many goals they scored but these specific selections highlight the telepathic understanding both had on the pitch.
Scudetto Decider vs Udinese (5th May,2002)
5th May,2002 is a symbolic date in the folklore of Juventus football club. It was a day which saw them snatch the Scudetto from the grasp of arch-rivals Inter Milan in dramatic fashion. Going into the game Juventus were third on the table but at the end of 90 minutes they were crowned champions. Del Piero made it 2-0 in the first half after latching on to a crossfield diagonal from his strike partner Trezeguet before expertly stroking it past Udinese goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis sparking wild celebrations on the touchline as head coach Marcelo Lippi slowly came to terms with the fact that Juventus were on the verge of something miraculous.
Scudetto decider vs Milan(2005)
Another goal which decided the league title in favor of Juventus but this time it was Del Piero with an out-of-the-world assist for his strike partner. The 35th game week of the Serie A season 2004-05 saw Juventus face AC Milan at the San Siro which was billed as the title decider between the top two sides in the league. Trezeguet settled a tense affair with a 28th minute header but the assist from Alex Del Piero definitely takes the accolades here. Genaro Gattuso blocked the initial cross but the ricochet looped up in the air which was met by a stunning overhead kick from Del Piero. Trezeguet just completed the formalities from there.
UEFA Champions League Semifinal vs Real Madrid(2003)
This goal did not earn any trophies or medals for Juventus but it set them on their way to a famous 3-1 win over the mighty Real Madrid in the Uefa Champions League semifinal in 2003. Juventus came into the game with a 2-1 deficit in the first leg but memorably overturned the tie with a majestic performance in Stadio Delle Alpi. They took the lead after some brilliant work on the right wing by Pavel Nedved found Alessandro Del Piero on the back post who cushioned it for Trezeguet to smash past the hapless Iker Casillas. A fine goal highlighting the predatory instincts of the Frenchman in the opposition penalty area. Del Piero would go on to score a cracking goal himself later which sealed a famous win for the Italian champions.
Penalty vs Sampdoria (2008)
A moment of sheer class from Alessandro Del Piero as he let his friend and strike partner David Trezeguet to take the spot kick which enabled him to get his 20th goal of the season. Both Del Piero and Trezeguet were tied on 19 goals before the beginning of the last game of the campaign against Sampdoria. Both were joint top scorers in Italy that season and the final game would be the decider as to who wins the highest scorer award. Del Piero earned the penalty and was the designated spot-kick taker of the team. But still he gave Trezeguet the chance which he duly converted. Del Piero eventually finished the season with 21 goals and won the capocannoniere crown.
Trezeguet goal vs Livorno (2008)
A goal which probably best highlights the partnership of these two legends was this one against Livorno in 2007-08 season. A brilliant dummy from Trezeguet was followed by an inch-perfect pass from Del Piero. The move was finished with aplomb by the Frenchman who blasted the volley into the net. This was a goal of highest quality which was achieved due to the brilliant understanding the two of them had on the pitch that served Juventus for more than 10 years.
