The Liverpool defenderai??i??s current contract expires this summer and he will be free to talk to foreign clubs in January.
The 30-year-old Reds defender will become a free agent next summer and will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from 1st January, 2015. Johnson has so far refused to accept the 1 year contract extension to his A?120,000-a-week deal from Liverpool. This offer was presented to him and his agent earlier this year but so far Johnson has rejected it. Liverpool have recently secured the long term services of fellow English team-mate Daniel Sturridge and have opened negotiations with Raheem Sterling over an extended contract.
When asked about the situation of his contract extension, Johnson replied it was “very quiet”. He further added, “I am just concentrating week by week and not thinking about it. Of course I want to stay but, like I say, I worry about this week, this week, and then next week, next week. That is how I live my life.”
He expressed his disappointment on being left out of the England squad for the upcoming Euro qualifiers and claimed that he would have preferred the fixtures another week later during which he could have showcased his match fitness to national boss Roy Hodgson.
He said, “I would have preferred the internationals to have come next week so I could declare myself fit and available. Obviously with the squad being picked last Thursday, I hadn’t played for six weeks so I couldn’t be involved. Of course I want to go away with the England team and play again for them as well.”
“Of course, no player wants to be injured. I feel good and it’s about match fitness now. The body feels good so I just need some training sessions and I can take it from there.”
Glen Johnson returned this weekend in Liverpoolai??i??s 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion after a six-week injury layoff and believes his side will go on a positive run after the international break.
“It is frustrating to watch because you want to be out there on the line with the lads, and you want to be there even more when it is not going too well. The most important thing for me was getting fit and hoping the lads could pull us on while I was not able to help.It is difficult when you have bad periods, but you’ll get good periods. That is football.”
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has already made plans to replace Johnson if he does leave. He has Jon Flanagan and Javier Manquillo as options in the right-back position, while Alberto Moreno is now the club’s first choice at left-back – where Johnson featured in the past.
