Liverpool have started well in the transfer window. Brendan Rodgers has already made two signings, both poles apart in nature and their respective need to the team, but both very essential in the club’s quest for making a successful return to the Champions League, making another Premier League title challenge and trying to win some silverware at the end of the season.
It was very evident by the latter stage of last season that the club had very little depth in the squad. Academy players like Jordan Rossister and Brad Smith featured in the squad in key matches like the first one against Chelsea. Brendan Rodgers is well aware that his side needs addition to make sure they don’t fall short again. That also means that there should be quality on the bench. Adding a lot of mediocre players will not help the cause.
Liverpool do also need to filter their ranks and sell the players who don’t look like they have a future at the club. The club could add to their transfer chest through this and also have their wage bill decreased. This will only help in the signings of players like Xherdan Shaqiri, who are likely to command a high wage.
Here is a list of five players Liverpool should offload this summer, but with adequate replacements.
1. Iago Aspas- The striker who was signed to be a Luis Suarez replacement last season has flopped at the club. In Aspas’s defence, he didn’t get enough chances to really make an impression. Liverpool fought off interest from Tottenham to sign the player from Celta Vigo. He spent most part of the season on the bench, playing back-up to Suarez and Sturridge and hence, didn’t get enough chances. However, the club needs player who can make the difference when SAS can’t and Aspas is clearly not the person to do that. Rickie Lambert became Liverpool’s first signing of the summer and hence a replacement is already there for his possible sale. Lambert can prove to be Liverpool’s ideal third choice striker and would be fighting Fabio Borini, who had a spectacular season on loan at Sunderland, for the spot. The sale of Aspas looks as if its on the cards and would him as well as the club.Ai??
2.Ai??Oussama Assaidi– The player who snubbed Ajax for Liverpool was one of Brendan Rodgers first signings as Liverpool manager. He showed signs of promise when he got a chance in the 2012/13 season. However, he was deemed surplus to requirements last season and was loaned to Stoke City. The winger performed well under Mark Hughes. His good performances, which included a brilliant winning goal against Chelsea, even raised questions at Brendan Rodgers, who bought in the Victor Moses from Chelsea to fill that left winger position. But it is evident that Rodgers would not keep the player. Mark Hughes has appreciated ‘Ossie’ time and again, and has stated his desire to purchase him on a permanent basis. It has been reported thatAi??Liverpool are demanding A?7m from Stoke for his services and Stoke are unwilling to spend that sum. It is however,Ai??believed that Stoke are confident of haggling with Liverpool in a bid to lower the price to a more acceptable level. Rodgers does need to address the left winger position and has targeted Bayern Munich’s Xherdan Shaqiri, Barcelona’s Pedro and Southampton’s Adam Lallana (capable of playing on the wings) as a solution for this.
3.Ai??Sebastian Coates-Ai??Liverpool fans might not be remembering that Coates is still a Liverpool player. The promising Uruguayan defender was brought in by Kenny Dalglish in 2011.Ai??He was awarded the honour of being voted the Uruguayan Championshipai???s “Revelation of the Season.” in 2010, when he was only 20 and hence naturally had a lot of hopes pinned on him.Ai??He did in fact, deliver on those hopes whenever given a chance. He is famously remembered for his scissor kick goal against QPR in the 11/12 season. However,Ai??he has only made 24 first-team appearances during his time at the club.Ai??The Liverpool defender was sidelined for almost eight months after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury on international duty last August but has been on the comeback trail at his former club Nacional, whom he joined on loan in January. He has been included in Uruguay’s World Cup squad, which is not shocking sine he was an important part of the side’s 2011 Copa America win where he was also awarded the “Trophy Claro” for being the Best Young Player of the Tournament. Even though his quality suggests that he should be kept at the club, it remains unlikely that he will be. The defender admitted that the situation with his parent club remains complicated which gave hints of him leaving the club for good. Liverpool don’t need cover for the centre back pairing of Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho as they have returning Tiago Ilori within their ranks. The club is also likely to purchase Dejan Lovren from Southampton. Even though Coates’s promise suggests he should be given adequate chances with the club, it is almost certain that he will be sold by the club, which again, is much needed to filter the squad.Ai??
4.Ai??Glen Johnson-Ai??The ex- Chelsea player was remarkable a season or two back. But Johnson has been far from his best last season. His case was made worse by recurring injuries. But even when fit, he did not do himself any justice. Johnson was largely responsible for Liverpool’s capitulation against Crystal Palace. The right back used to be a menace both in attack as well as defence, but lately has been out of sorts in both departments. When he does surge forward, he falls short on his defensive duties. Commanding a heavy wage, the 29 year old only has one year left on his contract. There were talks of a stalled contract extension negotiations. Liverpool should definitely look to offload the player. Alberto Moreno looks like he is on his way to the club. But the Spaniard primarily plays as a left back and would be competing for a place with Jose Enrique. Jon Flanagan is primarily a right back, so is young Martin Kelly and if a replacement is not bought, one of the youngsters would probably fill in for the England defender.
5. Daniel Agger-Ai??The Kop faithful will hate to see this name on the list, but fact remain facts- it was visible through the course of last season that the Danish captain’s future at the club was over. Clearly playing back-up to Mamadou Sakho, Agger was receded to the bench for most part of the season. With Tiago Ilori’s return, it seems like Brendan Rodgers would probably give the young Portuguese more chances after Ilori’s impressive short loan spell at Grananda, than the Danish veteran. Even after being entrusted with the vice-captain’s responsibility, it was Luis Suarez who led the side in the absence of Steven Gerrard. Liverpool will get a decent amount on his sale and he is wanted by the likes of Barcelona and Napoli and a move would thus be mutually good for the player as well as the club.
