Since its inception the World Cup has seen many young tyros, who have turned out to become superstars of the highest order. We look at five young players to watch-out for in the FIFA 2014 World Cup.
Bernard
Bernard AnAi??cio Caldeira Duarte, simply known as Bernard, is one of the many shining jewels in a talented Brazil squad which looks to emulate France, England, West Germany, Uruguay and Italy as the host winners of a World Cup. Bernard is one of those little, tricky players with a low centre of gravity and likes to cut inside from the left wing. The Shakthar Donetsk man is most likely to be used as an impact substitute on the left hand side in Scholari`s favorite 4-2-3-1 formation, and his pace and energy on the flank is sure to create problems against tired defences who will be knackered in muggy conditions. Bernard has not exactly set the world alight at his first season in Donetsk, but will be more than ready for the first game against Croatia on June 12th
Paul Pogba
The French squad is a confident bunch this time around and they will look to emulate that uncanny knack of performing well in alternate World Cups. (1998 winners, 2002 Group Stage, 2006 Runners-Up, 2010 Group Stages) Going by that theory, the Frenchmen are expected to make it to the final of the World Cup in 2014. They have a pretty good chance of making it to the quarter finals (where they might meet Germany) with a relatively easy draw and a dangerous squad which has nothing to lose. The French are believed to be transition at the moment and according to many pundits and French football lovers, their focus is on the Euro`s on home soil in 2016.
There are some bright starlets in the French squad who would love to prove that this

Paul Pogba is one bright prospect, who is sure to get tongues wagging with his athleticism and direct approach to the game. The 21 year old Frenchman has had a solid season (bagging 8 goals and 8 assists) in the Juve midfield alongside the master Andrea Pirlo. Pogba would have surely rubbed off the Italian`s influence and will look to pull the strings from midfield alongside Matuidi and Cabaye. Didier Deschamps has been there and done that (he won the World Cup as captain in 1998) and will know how to go about it and inspire the Les Bleus to their second World Cup win.
Raheem Sterling
Rewind to the 6th minute against Manchester City at Anfield last month, Raheem Sterling was through on goal until Kompany and Hart got back and blocked the path to the goal. Time stood still at that moment, but Sterling had the quality and composure to swivel a wee bit to his right and score a stunning goal. The talent has always been there with Sterling, but what was most impressive was his composure in front of goal.
For a kid who was linked with a loan move to Swansea at the end of December to becoming
one of Liverpool`s mainstays, it is not at all a surprise that the 19 year old Jamaican born Sterling has been included in the world cup squad. Searing pace, good technique and lethal in front of goal, Sterling has it in him to succeed at the highest level like the World Cup and together with his younger colleagues in Wilshere, Barkley, Shaw and Oxlade Chamberlain, he will look to prove that England are in safer hands with this next generation to compete in international tournaments.
Thibaut Courtois
Having played every minute of the qualifying games for the FIFA World Cup, Courtois is a vital player for a brave, new Belgian side (A golden generation if you like) and will look hope to take them all the way by performing well at the back. He has had a stupendous season at Atletico de Madrid, helping them successfully break the duopoly of Barcelona by winning the La Liga and helping them to the finals of the Champions League.
Ai??The 22 year old has all the attributes of a world class goal keeper and is up there with the likes of Neuer, Lloris and Casillas. He is a good shot stopper, commanding in the box and his distribution is not bad either. The ai???Ricardo Zamora Trophy Winnerai??i?? (an award given in Spain for lowest “goals-to-games” ratio) will hope for a personal treble this year and will try to add the Champions League and the FIFA World Cup to his trophy cabinet in what is quickly becoming his breakthrough year. The constant rumors about his future might be a worry for Marc Wilmots, but Courtois has what it takes to focus on what lies ahead and prepare well for the World Cup. Many neutrals consider Belgium as the dark horses for the world cup, and should they end up winning it, then Courtois would have surely played an important role.
Christian Atsu
Another one of those ai???Vitesse-Chelseaai??i?? products, Atsu is one player definitely worth looking out for.Ai?? The 22 year old Ghanaian who has been voted as Vitesse Arnhem`s player of the season (scoring 5 goals and 6 assists) is tipped by many Ghanaians to take the world cup by storm and help the Black Stars to progress from the group stage which has Germany, Portugal and The United States. Ghana, who reached the quarter finals of the last edition, will need young stars like Atsu to put up a stiff challenge.
An attacking midfielder, Atsu can play on both flanks as well as behind the striker. The Ghanaians pack their midfield and are compact with their 4-4-2 or a 4-5-1 formation. Atsu might start on the wings and provide support to Gyan upfront and constantly switch positions with Kevin Prince Boateng and Andre Ayew.Ai?? Akwasi Ai??Appiah`s men have nothing to lose and they will try to throw the kitchen`s sink at their opponents, which naturally makes them very dangerous. They have a very good side and can cause a major upset if starlets like Atsu find their feet early in the tournament.
