Since Pep Guardiola became manager of FC Barcelona, the club has experienced a period of success that few, if any, other clubs have. Homegrown talents built the foundation of this team, and Barcelona supplemented these players with signings that fit the overall system. However, after their phenomenal 2010-11 season, their transfer dealings have taken an interesting turn, seemingly focused more on stars/names rather than fit with/needs of the system. This transfer policy has led to an imbalance in the squad, as Barcelona find themselves lacking numbers in central midfield and lacking both numbers and defensive quality at the back.
Summer of 2011
Barcelona completed a historic season. While they did not win the treble (La Liga, Copa Del Rey, and Champions League titles) like they did in 2008-09, this team represented the apotheosis of Pep Guardiolaai??i??s playing philosophy. Ai??Not only did they dominate teams in possession, but their relentless pressing made them a nightmare for any side that possessed the ball.
With respect to the latter, the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez made sense. A player gifted with athleticism, a season or two under Pep Guardiola would allow Sanchez to develop into a more efficient presser, rather than an uncontrolled ball of energy.
In possession Sanchez did not seem an intuitive fit at Barcelona. At Udinese, Alexis Sanchez played with quite a bit of freedom. With his technical ability and acceleration, he gave the Zebrette an unpredictable and penetrative dribbler. It also meant that Sanchez had his fair share of turnovers and dispossessions in this free role. To get the most out of Sanchez, especially if one wished to justify spending 37.5 million euros (26 million + 11.5 million in clauses), he needs to have the freedom to express himself.
However, Barcelonaai??i??s system calls for one risk-taker, and Lionel Messi occupies that role. That means that Barcelona paid top dollar for a player who they would not play in his best role. While Sanchez did figure out and excel in a supporting role for Barcelona in 2013-14, one cannot help but wonder if they paid too much for a player overqualified to play a role similar to Pedro. It seemed that buying one of the hottest talents in world football took precedence over whether that talent was a natural fit for a unique system.
While the Alexis Sanchez signing made some on-the-pitch sense, their other big signing did not. While Cesc Fabregas developed at La Masia, his style of play came about during his time at Arsenal. Much more of an ai???Englishai??? midfielder than a Barcelona product, Fabregas developed into a fantastic attacking midfielder, someone who could control a game in the attacking third, play the killer throughball, and make the late run into the box to score a goal. Give him the keys to the attack and he will make that engine purr.
However, at Barcelona, Lionel Messi is the focal point of the attack. This left Barcelona to play him in Xaviai??i??s role or Iniestaai??i??s role. However, Fabregas did not represent an upgrade in either role, nor did those roles represent the best way to use him on the pitch. Also, his lack of cohesion with the rest of the Barcelona players prevented Barcelona from moving the ball as quickly as they did with Xavi and Iniesta in their normal roles. Instead, Fabregas became a kind of utility attacker, a player without a defined role in the system, someone Barcelona tried to squeeze onto the pitch.
More importantly, Fabregas did not fit Barcelona defensively. As much as Barcelonaai??i??s possession play defined their dominance, their intense high pressing was the other defining and essential component of their play. Fabregas, having little defensive responsibility at Arsenal and being relatively immobile relative to the rest of the Barcelona XI, never seemed and never became a fit for a pressing Barcelona. And while Barcelona would struggle to maintain that pressing game, due to physical attrition, the signing of Fabregas gave them a weak point defensively, rather than helping to remove some of the defensive burden of Barcelonaai??i??s aging midfielders. So, given the lack of a fit, both offensively and defensively, it seems Barcelona had a greater concern for bringing home a La Masia product than they had for the system (Barcelona fans who dislike the Fabregas signing might also link the acquisition to Barcelonaai??i??s failure to meet Thiago Alcantaraai??i??s appearance benchmark, which allowed Bayern Munich to buy him for 20 million euros).
Summer of 2012
Barcelona did not make any vanity signings in this window, but they did make a highly questionable signing. In an effort to replace Seydou Keita, an important squad player given his quality and versatility, Barcelona gifted Arsenal 15 million pounds to take the ill-disciplined (bordering on tactically unintelligent) midfielder off their hands.
Despite the injury issues and decline in quality of Carles Puyol, Barcelona failed to acquire a center-back. They did make an attempt to sign Thiago Silva, but had their bid blown away by Paris Saint-Germain. While other quality center-backs could have come to the Camp Nou, Barcelona pushed on with their desire to play Javier Mascherano and Alex Song at center-back.
Summer of 2013
The loss of Thiago Alcantara may become a historic moment for Barcelona. In Thiago, they had a homegrown talent, someone brought up with the Barcelona way of playing, and someone who could replace an aging Xavi or play in the more attacking role of Andres Iniesta. Losing him meant that Barcelona lost their ability to cope with the inevitable decline of their midfield core.
In addition to losing Thiago Alcantara and David Villa, Barcelona decided not to retain the services of Eric Abidal. While Abidal could not perform at the level Barcelona needed, his departure meant that the club no longer had that utility defender, giving the squad some flexibility defensively. He could play in a back three; he could play center back in a back four. Most importantly, having him at left-back in a back four gave Barcelona someone who could cover the center backs and Busquets defensively. For all of Jordi Albaai??i??s attacking prowess, he has never displayed the defensive discipline or defensive skill that Abidal possessed.
Combine this loss with another year of injuries and decline for Carles Puyol, with Songai??i??s inability to play center-back well, with Mascherano not playing the position as well in 2012-13 as he had in 2011-12, and Barcelona have a legitimate crisis at the back.
Instead of addressing that situation, Barcelona paid a large sum on Neymar. Similar to the Alexis Sanchez signing in the summer of 2011, the issue with this signing came down to fit, not talent. Once again, Barcelona brought in a player who is best suited as the focal point of the attack even though their system calls for the attack to revolve around Messi. This requires Neymar to sacrifice his game, to not do what he does best. Spending that much money on a player one seemingly has to shoehorn appears like a poor investment. And that ignores the value of those resources going towards fixing Barcelonaai??i??s crisis at the back line. Maybe the value the Barcelona brass put on keeping a star like Neymar away from Real Madrid made the transfer worth it. However, that seems a poor strategy with respect to building a winning side.
Summer of 2014
So far, this summer has represented quite a shift for Barcelona. For a side who have benefitted from their cohesion, Barcelona will have to integrate a few key new pieces while coping with the loss of quite a few players. While the signing of Ivan Rakitic seems like a shrewd purchase at 18 million euros, and they seemed to have adequately replaced Victor Valdes in the short term (Claudio Bravo) and in the long term (Marc-Andre ter Stegen).
Yet again, Barcelona went for star power rather than addressing a glaring need. Going into the 2014-15 season, Barcelona have Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano and Marc Bartra at center-back. At right back, they have Dani Alves and Martin Montoya, and at left back, they have Jordi Alba and Adriano. What had been a center-back crisis at Barcelona may turn into a lack of defensive quality across the back line. Instead of addressing the issue (and they still have time to do so before the window closes and FIFAai??i??s transfer ban potentially kicks them out of the market for two windows), Barcelona bolstered their attacking options, signing Luis Suarez from Liverpool for 75 million pounds. A transition to a front three of Suarez, Neymar, and Messi with Messi in a withdrawn central role could make Barcelona a more potent goal-scoring threat. However, they appear weaker defensively than at any point in the past.
There also appears to be a lack of depth in midfield, depending on how much faith one has in Rafael Alcantara and Sergi Roberto. It seems odd that Barcelona would have such little depth in midfield, the area of the pitch most critical to their dominance. Maybe Barcelona will move Sergio Busquets higher up the pitch and play Mascherano in a holding role, giving them an alternative midfield configuration if either Iniesta or Rakitic cannot play. However, having to do that for a long period would only exacerbate the lack of options at center back.
So, while Barcelona have signed the biggest superstar of the window, their failure to address obvious areas of need could prevent them from winning La Liga or the Champions League.
Conclusion
The issues that Barcelona face at the back and the increasing issues in central midfield seem self-inflicted through poor transfer policy. Ironically, Barcelona seem to have morphed into a club run by Florentino Perez. Instead of looking to sign players who fit the system or signing the occasional true center-back, Barcelona have looked to sign the best talents. With a potential two-window transfer ban looming over their heads, these imbalances could turn Barcelonaai??i??s star-driven policy into a waste of money in search of trophies.
