Robin van Persie has told new arrival Radamel Falcao that he must fight for his place in the starting 11.
The eye-catching arrival of Radamel Falcao on deadline day has left many suggesting that El Tigre would be the first name on the teamsheet. However, van Persie believes that the Colombian should no that he won’t be guaranteed an immediate first-team place at Manchester United. The Dutch captain is also not intimidated by his arrival and feels that a club should always go for the best players.
“I welcome his arrival, he makes us better,” Van Persie told Fox Sports NL.
“At a top club you should always go for the best, which also fits my philosophy. Falcao must fight for his place, as I also have to.”
Falcao scored 11 goals in 20 appearances for French Ligue 1 side Monaco last season, before suffering a knee injury in January that kept him out of the World Cup in Brazil. The 20 time League champions have acquired his services on a one year loan and also have the option to make the deal permanent next year. Falcao had openly claimed throughout the transfer window that he was interested in a move to Real Madrid. However, that deal failed to materialize and United pounced on the opportunity to bring the 28 year old to Old Trafford.
There was also some speculation that Falcao had been brought in by United to replace Van Persie as the 31 has been suffering from recurring injuries in the past one year and is also rumoured to require knee surgery.
“I am impressed that people have the imagination to invent something like that,” said the Netherlands international.
“I do not know where it comes from and can say with my hand on my heart that I won’t be in a hospital to have the operation.”
Meanwhile Falcao’s father revealed that Premier League rivals Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City were keen on landing his son. While Liverpool’s interest was there before the Reds got Mario Balotelli, Arsenal were believed to be holding an interest in the player till late. Manchester City apparently pulled out of the deal as they currently have Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic in the first team picture.
“The clubs that showed an interest were Juventus, Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal at the last minute,” Radamel Garcia told a Colombian radio station.
“Real Madrid chose not to. Thank God everything came through with United.”
