With a hard fought 2-1 win over Tollygunge Agragami, Kingfisher East Bengal made history as they become the only club to win the Calcutta Football leagueAi??five consucutive times , twice . The last time they won the Calcutta Fotbball League for 5 times , they won it 6 Times on the trot from 1970 to 1975.
Tollygunge Agragami could have made history too , if they had won their match against Kingfisher East Bengal , Tollygunge would have become only the second team to win the Calcutta Football League apart from the big three of Calcutta Football. As of now this record can be proudly boasted only by Eastern Railways, who won the 1958 campaign with legendary players like P.K.Banerjee, Prasanta Sinha etc bringing the trophy to the club.
Going into the final match of the season (Kingfisher East Bengal vs Tollygunge Agragami) and with both the teams on 22 points and with a single game to play, Mohun Bagan still had an outside chance of clinching the title
Kingfisher East Bengal started their campaign, with Armando Colaco naming a new look youthful squad and were dealt a major blow as they lost 1-0 against Mohammedan Sporting and Tollygunge started their campaign with a defeat to Mohun Bagan. Mohun Bagan triumped over Tollygunge in their first game courtesy a Jeje penalty late in the 1st half. Mohun Bagan got maximum points from their first 3 games , but two consucutive defeats left them with little or no chance of lifting the league title. Bagan won their remaining 5 fixtures but in the end those two defeats proved vital as they lost the league by 1 point.
Tollygunge started their campaign with a defeat against Mohun Bagan, but they bounced back in the next match thrashing BNR FC 3-0.They went on a winning run for the next 5 games and were haulted in their 7th game , when they were held to a goalless draw by Kalighat MS. They returned and won their next two matches but they faultered in their final hurdle to eventual champions Kingfisher East Bengal. Tollygunge came really close to win the Sahara Calcutta Football League for the first time, since the clubs inception but ultimately the 2 defeats at the hands of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan and that vital goalless draw, in the 7th round of fixtures against Kalighat cost them the title . Subrata Bhattacharya has done a commendable job, taking Tollygunge Agragami to touching distance of the trophy winning 7 matches out of their 10 , with a squad much lesser than the big two in Kolkata Football. Hopefully they will come back stronger next season and we get to see another close fight for the title. Bello Rasaq the scorer in the match against East Bengal , is almost certain to join Kingfisher East Bengal for their I-league campaign and that will certainly create a hole in defence which has to be filled by the Tollygunge management.
Mohun Bagan finished their 2014 campaign with a 3-1 win, against Southern Samity and took their ponts tally for the campaign to 24 points from their 10 games .Mcdowells Mohun Bagan had an outside chance of winning the League title, but in the end they finished in 2nd position, 1 point behind Eventual winners Kingfisher East Bengal.Their two consucutive defeats at the hands of Mohammedan SC and Kingfisher East Bengal ultimately cost them their title. 8 wins and 2 defeats left them with 24 points on the board and hopefully with the late show in the Calcutta Football League , their fans will be optimistic about their performances in other competitions, specially the I-League .
Kingfisher East Bengal started the campaign with a defeat but in the next round they thrashed away BNR FC 4-1. Eventually their first Game would end up as the only defeat of their title winning campaign, as they dropped points only on one more occassion, against Kalighat MS on 26th August.
Going into the 5 th round of fixtures , the 150th Calcutta Fottball League Derby was poised in favour of Mcdowells Mohun Bagan and a win would almost certainly guarantee them of their first silverware, for 4 years.Ultimately it ended 3-1 in favour of Kingfisher East Bengal.
From then on the combination of Dudu , Ranti Martins and another player, whose name will hopefully be on the lips of every Indian Football Fanai??i??s name for the next couple of years, Prahlad Roy led Kingfisher East Bengal to 5 wins on the trot to land the Sahara Calcutta Football League for the 5th consecutive time . Prahlad Roy a former Mohun Bagan SAIL Academy graduate and Abinash Ruidas have shown immense signs for them to go on and become a great prospect , for Indian Football in the near future.
The SAI Darjeeling team might have accumulated just 5 points from their 10 games, but their team played a fluidic brand of football , that was appreciated by everyone. Their players (maximum u-19 players) have caught the eye of big clubs and some of them seem destined for a bigger and better future .
Another team finishing in the top 4 Mohammedan , started the campaign on a high , beating Kingfisher East Bengal and overcoming Kalighat , Police and Techno Aryan in their first 4 matches but their run got haulted against BNR FC and never really picked up from there .
Ultimately Kingfisher East Bengal showed us again that to win a title , a team has to be consistent throughout and has to pick up momentum just at the right moment. Armando Colaco’s policy of mixing youth with experience paid off in the end. They gave every other team in the League a perfect example of how to win a league and how to hold their nerve in critical times and emerge victorius in the 2014 campaign of the Sahara Calcutta Football League.
