The football depraved city of Delhi will face another crisis as the Durand Cup has been shifted to Goa, however the Indian Super League should instigate and demolish this crisis.
Ever since its commencement in 1888, the Durand Cup is one of the oldest footballing tournaments in the annals of history. Commencing in Goa, the Durand Cup is set to take place in RAIA Ground of the Raia Sports Club. The ground is habitual in holding 1st Division and 2nd Division matches of Goa League. The pitch surprisingly is decent enough and some may argue even better than its compatriot in Delhi.
With I-League Champions Bengaluru FC ready to make their debut in the much acclaimed tournament, concerns have been raised over dates, clashing with the Indian Super League.
Goa however has welcomed this event with open hands, but with the franchisee based Indian Super League gathering momentum, crowds could be drawn to that mega event.
“Nobody is competing with tournaments here. Everyone has to do well for each other. We do not want people of Goa to choose between Durand and ISL; we want them to enjoy the best of both,”Ai?? Lt Gen P R Shankar, general officer commanding, told Times Of India.
The Tournament kicks off on the 20th of October and the quarter-final stages would be initiated from the 29th of the same month. With dates set to clash with the fixtures of FC GOA, the tournament’s final is soon to be rescheduled to the 8th of November, accommodating footballing fixtures.
Whilst Mohun Bagan has clearly denied the invite, Dempo SC, Salgaocar FC, Sporting Clube de Goa, Churchill Brothers, United Sports Club, Mohammedan Sporting, Bengaluru FC, Pune FC, Indian Navy, East Bengal and two qualifiers, are set to grace the event with their footballing talent.
