Chelsea FC produced an efficient display against Galatasaray at Stamford Bridge last night to book a place in the Quarter Finals of the Champions League.
With this win, the Blues has become the first English team to qualify for the next round in this seasonai??i??s Champions League ai??i?? Manchester United have the opportunity to follow their lead, although they have a much tougher task tonight. Chelsea went into this game with a slight advantage having scored an away goal in the first leg and produced a wonderfully compact performance at Stamford Bridge to win 3-1 on aggregate.
Chelsea started the match brightly and Samuel Etoai??i??o provided them with the lead with a goal in the fourth minute of the game after he Oscar found him with a through ball. Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera would perhaps be a bit disappointed having failed to keep it out despite getting a hand to the ball.
Gary Cahill doubled Chelseaai??i??s lead right at the end of first half and virtually sealed the matchai??i??s result. The defender scored from close range after Galatasaray failed to deal with a Chelsea corner and Muslera parried John Terryai??i??s initial head into the path of Cahill. Galatasaray failed to create too many chances throughout the game and didnai??i??t manage a single shot on target. It was a convincing home win for Chelsea in the end and they can now concentrate on the title race in the Premier League.
Jose Mourinho was delighted with the win and the ai???compactai??? performance put out by his side and insisted they could have won by a bigger margin.
“It was a very good performance, very solid, very compact, no fears and a very good approach to the game.
“Even if you are winning 2-0, it is difficult because if they score one goal you are on the limit. The team was very solid and confident and very much in control for the 90 minutes which is difficult to do.
“The 2-0 score kept the game alive to the end but the way we played was very solid so even with 2-0, we were very much in control and had the best chances to score again.
“Probably the result could have been much bigger because we were much better than Galatasaray.” ai??i?? The Chelsea manager said.
Most of the pre-match talks were about the return of Didier Drogba to Stamford Bridge, but the former Chelsea striker failed to have any significant impact on the game and Mourinho believes he didnai??i??t get proper service from his team.
“The most difficult thing was the way his team played. For every striker in the world, if your team doesn’t produce attacking football then you feel a lonely man.
“So he couldn’t do much and Gary Cahill and John Terry did a fantastic performance against two very good strikers. We controlled the game so well that we didn’t see Drogba in dangerous positions.” ai??i?? Mourinho added.
The Chelsea boss also believes that Manchester United can follow their lead and book a place in the next round as they face Olympiakos later tonight.
“I keep saying the same, I believe that while Man United are in the competition they can do it, and I hope they do it tomorrow.
