Chelseaai??i??s summer transfer window of 2014 was a clinic in decisiveness and efficiency. The Blues may or may not go on to win the Premier League, but the general consensus amongst pundits and fans alike is that – at least amongst the English clubs – Chelsea were the winners of the transfer market.
A good transfer window, especially from a financial point of view, is something of a rarity for the side from south-west London. Since the takeover by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Chelsea have spent more than any other club in the Premier League, often indiscriminately and wastefully. For all their profligacy in the past decade, however, the last couple of years have seen a paradigm shift in Chelseaai??i??s transfer policy.
Perhaps the Champions League win in 2012 acted as a catalyst for the change, in that it prompted Abramovich and the Chelsea board to adopt a more long-term view for the future of the club after it finally truly became part of the European elite. UEFAai??i??s Financial Fair Play policy no doubt has had a major impact as well, and Chelsea know that their days of massive spending and incurring huge losses are at an end. A litany of transfer market indiscretions mars Chelseaai??i??s transfer record over the past ten years, and often the good work the club have done over the past couple of years is overlooked because of it. Indeed, such prudence and efficiency in the transfer market is something that the Chelsea fans themselves have not quite got used to. Of all the smart buys Chelsea have made in recent times three in particular stand out.
#3 Nemanja Matic
On the face of it, the A?21m signing of a defensive midfielder from the Portuguese league seems like anything but a bargain particularly when you take into account the fact that Chelsea used Nemanja Matic as part of a deal to lure David Luiz to the club from Benfica as recently as January 2011. Considered in the current context however, it might make a little more sense. Players in the Matic mould are a very rare commodity, particularly world-class ones. Manchester City had to fork out A?34m for Fernandinho, whilst the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal are still looking to fill that role in their respective midfields. Manchester United spent A?28m on Marouane Fellaini, a player who flopped badly and now has a very uncertain future at the club under Louis van Gaal. Bayern Munich had to pay upwards of A?31m for Javi Martinez and the likes of William Carvalho, Kevin Strootman and Arturo Vidal have all been valued by their clubs at exorbitant prices.
It is easier, of course, to make a judgement with the benefit of hindsight. Even so, considering that Matic has been world-class since his return to Chelsea and arguably their most consistent player in 2014, it is not difficult to see why Chelsea swallowed their pride and re-signed him in January of this year. Not only did the Serbian international settle in seamlessly in the Bluesai??i?? midfield upon his return, but he has made himself an integral part of a side that is everyoneai??i??s favourite to win the Premier League.
Maticai??i??s time at Benfica was crucial to his development. Jorge Jesusai??i?? decision to shift him to the base of the midfield proved to be a stroke of genius. The Serbian grew into the role superbly ai??i?? so much so that he was awarded Best Player in the League in the 2012-2013 season for his outstanding performances for Benfica. Not only is Matic superb at breaking up play and intercepting passes, he also has the ability to drive forward with the ball and make brilliant passes himself. His physical presence in the centre of the park, his tactical discipline and intelligence in possession make him a vital cog in Mourinhoai??i??s Chelsea machine.
Other than Diego Costa, Nemanja Matic is probably the one player that the Blues cannot afford to lose for an extended period of time. Given that he is only 26 and can still continue to improve, Chelsea have themselves a player that is the envy of most of the other top sides in the league. Alongside new signing Cesc Fabregas, the Serbian will be an ever-present in the Chelsea side this season, and will be a vital member of the new spine that Mourinho builds at Chelsea over the next few seasons. His sheer quality combined with the relatively low price tag make him one of Chelseaai??i??s best buys in recent times.
#2 Cesar Azpilicueta
It took him a while to break through at Chelsea, but Cesar Azpilicueta has now established himself as one of the best full-backs in the Premier League. Signed for a mere A?7m from Marseille in August 2012, the Spaniard has seen off competition from the likes of Ashley Cole and new signing Filipe Luis to make the left-back spot in Chelseaai??i??s side his own. A fan favourite, who has been lovingly given the moniker of ai???Daveai??i?? by Chelsea fans because of the difficult pronunciation of his surname, the 25 year old has impressed Mourinho so much that he was recently awarded with a new five-year contract by the club.
Azpilicueta first truly got his breakthrough under interim boss Rafael Benitez, who made him his first choice right-back. Azpilicueta was a crucial part of the team that won the Europa League and finished third in the Premier League. Jose Mourinhoai??i??s return to Chelsea did initially see him relegated to the bench, but a reshuffle in the second half of the season meant that Azpilicueta came in for Ashley Cole at left-back and kept his place in the side with his impressive performances. Even though the season ended in disappointment for Chelsea, he was a crucial member of the best defence in the league in 2013-2014.
Despite the arrival of Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid, Azpilicueta has managed to keep his place in the side at left-back. It speaks volumes of the faith Mourinho has in him, given Luis was one of the best left-backs in Europe last season for a title-winning Atletico Madrid team. The Bluesai??i?? boss famously said last season, ai???Azpilicueta is a player I like a lot. I think a team of 11 Azpilicuetas can probably win the Champions Leagueai???.
Although his attacking instincts have been somewhat curtaile because of playing on the ai???wrongai??i?? flank, he is probably the best full-back defensively in the league. Unbeatable in one on one situations, his sense of positioning is superb, and he has the pace to make up for any potential lapses. Like Matic, Azpilicueta too will be a constant in an extremely promising Chelsea side this season. Given that he is only 25 years old, a long future at Chelsea awaits, and the Blues can pat themselves on the back for a very shrewd signing.
#1 Thibaut Courtois
At the tender age of 22, Thibaut Courtois can already lay claim to being one of the top goalkeepers in the world. Although Chelsea signed him for A?7m from Belgian club Genk in 2011, Courtoisai??i?? first official appearance for the Blues came in the first league game of the 2014-2015 Premier League season. Jose Mourinhoai??i??s decision to recall him to the Chelsea squad after three incredibly successful seasons at Atletico Madrid was met with much approval from the Bluesai??i?? faithful. As was widely expected, Mourinho chose Courtois over the legendary Petr Cech as his first choice goal keeper, and like Azpilicueta, the young Belgian has only recently signed a new five-year deal, committing his future to the club.
Courtois had a hugely successful spell in the Spanish capital, winning the Europa League, Copa del Rey and La Liga with Atletico as well as winning the Zamora trophy for the best goalkeeper in Spain for two out of his three years at the club. The undisputed No.1 for his national team, he reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup with Belgium, making a memorable save when one on one against Lionel Messi in the match.
The Belgianai??i??s height means that he has a brilliant reach, and is very good at snatching crosses out of the air, making things easier for his defenders. His reflexes are second to none, evident in the stunning saves that he has pulled off in his short career so far. The most remarkable thing about Courtois, though, is the uncanny ability he has to make important saves at crucial moments in a match. Countless times last season, Atletico had their goalkeeper to thank for winning them matches. In particular, his performances against Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea in the Champions League and Valencia in the Copa del Rey stand out. Even in his very short Chelsea career, he has made crucial saves against the likes of Leicester City and Everton that have helped Chelsea take home all three points.
Thibaut Courtois will be Chelseaai??i??s no.1 for the foreseeable future. The Blues have the luxury of not worrying about the goalkeeping positon for many years to come. As with Matic and Azpilicueta, Courtois will be a crucial member of the new spine that Mourinho is aiming to build for this Chelsea team. Given how good a goalkeeper he has developed into, Courtois has to be Chelseaai??i??s best signing in terms of value for money in the past few years, and perhaps even in the last decade.
Chelsea will continue to make big signings in the future, of that there is no doubt. However, as they seek to comply with FFP and chase the biggest clubs in the world in the revenue rat race, bargain signings such as these could help them close the gap. The club, and in particular, technical director Michael Emenalo, deserve a lot of praise for the vast network of scouts that Chelsea have built, and the consequent signings they have made because of the improvement in the scouting network. If the club can continue to unearth hidden gems such as Courtois, it is safe to say that ai??i?? even without Abramovichai??i??s billions ai??i?? Chelsea will continue to remain competitive at the highest level for a long time to come.
