The match that is usually a top-of-the-table clash has a different look to it this time around. United are ‘languishing’ in seventh place in the table and they travel to Stamford Bridge to take on a Chelsea side on a bit of a recovery themselves.
As is the tradition before every big Premier League game here at TheHardTackle, we put two rivals in the hot seat for a short question answer session and more often than not, a bit of banter. Attacking the red end, making chance after chance (but not defending that well like his team Chelsea) we have Alok Kulkarni and attacking the blue end, we have Arjun Some who seems to be a bit on the defensive these days, but like his team Manchester United, always ready to fight back.
Being the host, Alok allowed Arjun to choose what he wanted to do first. Arjun chose to attack in the first half. Here’s how it went.
Arjun: Half a season has passed since the Special Oneai??i??s been back. What does your half term report card say on him?
Alok: Personally, I could not be happier. There is finally some sense of stability at The Bridge and we look ready to win the title under a world class manager. Unlike last seasons, we are not loaded with games (FA Cup replays, League Cup matches et al) this time around and it will be interesting to see what Mourinho makes as his priority once the Champions League commences. He is known to favour the UCL, but the fans want the Premier League. Let’s see how Mourinho handles that!
Arjun: What do you make of the Juan Mata situation? Surely Mourinho could have handled it better, right? Had it been any other manager who ostracized a crowd favourite like that, the fans would have surely got on his back.
Alok: Yes, it is true. Any other manager handling Mata like this, he would have been as unpopular as Rafa Benitez by now. Personally, I would love to see Mata see this as a challenge, put his head down and prove Mourinho wrong. And in some corner of his heart, even Mourinho wants that. JM is surely wise enough to know that Mata is world class and can destroy any team on his day. Also, with players like Oscar and Hazard being in form this season, Mata has had to fight for his place even more. I hope this is amicably resolved and doesn’t involve The Special Juan leaving Stamford Bridge.
Arjun: So Nemanja Matic is back for 20 odd million. At this point of time in the season, is this what Chelsea really needed? How about spending some of that on a half decent striker perhaps?
Alok: A striker is the need of the hour, but a cover for Ramires and Mikel was also needed. Matic has been signed with half a mind on the fact that Ramires has been playing out of position this season and this will perhaps give him the license to roam ahead. Also, since Mikel has been rumoured to be looking at a move away from Stamford Bridge, hence this preemptive signing. Also yes, a striker is needed at this stage and I am quite sure Mourinho is looking at options around the leagues in Europe. In Mourinho We Trust!
Arjun: Eden Hazard has been brilliant for Chelsea this season. But rumours persist over his attitude in the training ground. Are they simply half cooked stories or a genuine matter of concern?
Alok: That, I think, is just the work of a bored tabloid column writer looking for publicity. Or maybe a United fan looking to play mind games with Hazard. Anyway, I have heard nothing but good things about him on the pitch and even off it.
Arjun: Coming to the match, do you think the fact that UnitedAi?? are so far off the pace this season puts extra pressure on Chelsea to win this game than in any other season?
Alok: Agree in part. Yes, there is extra pressure on Chelsea to win this match, but I think there is even more pressure on Manchester United to put in a performance and get something out of the game. Also, at this point in the season, Chelsea’s game against City coming up soon will be our biggest test and not this game. in summary, let’s just say Mourinho will be happier with a point than would Moyes.
Arjun: You do know that the streak has got to end someday or the other, right? Wouldnai??i??t it be ironic if this United team (without Rooney and van Persie) in the midst of this season be the ones to finally break Mourinhoai??i??sAi?? perfect league record at the Bridge? Your thoughts on that.
Alok: The streak does not have to end you know. We may have a new manager before that happens. Having said that, United do have a history of breaking streaks don’t they? Mourinho will be wary of that fact, but I don’t think it’s going to happen this time.
And with that blocked shot, Alok brings the first half to a close. Now for Arjun to defend while Alok attacks the Red end.
Ai??Alok: First things first.. Do you realistically believe you guys are still in the title race?
Arjun: Honestly speaking, no. The gap with Arsenal is presently 11 points; while same was the case back in 1996 with NewcastleAi?? when United did go on to topple the them and clinch the league, this time there are just too many teams in between for us to have a realistic chance. I think the league was lost in the back end of last year when United drew against Cardiff and Spurs and then went on to lose to Everton and Newcastle. Two points from those four fixtures knocked the stuffing out of Unitedai??i??s title defense. Ever since then, any talk of winning the league is pipe dreams. Right now, I will settle for a place in the top 4 and a good run in the Champions League.
Alok: According to me, David Moyes is the right man for the job at Old Trafford but he just needs some time to settle in. Your opinion?
Arjun: So you are of the kind who are in favour of giving a manager some time to settle in to their job? Well mate, all I can say is you are supporting the wrong club.
Coming to my opinion, David Moyes does need time and be rest assured he will be afforded that time. At the risk of sounding clichAi??d, Manchester United are a club like no other. Gary Neville put it eloquently when he stated ai???as a club United stand against the immediacy of modern lifeai??i??. Managers here have always been afforded time and I donai??i??t see the Glazers going against that. The six year contract they handed to Moyes is testament to the fact. I think everyone realizes, the size of the job at Moyesai??i?? hands. There is a serious dearth of quality in the squad inherited by him. I think the summer transfer window will be a defining one for United as Moyes, after having assessed his squad over an entire, will definitely look to ring in the changes. Lack of Champions League football might be a tricky issue in attracting top talents, but then again this is Manchester United we are talking about.
Also the other thing that works in Moyesai??i?? favour is that United financially are in a lot more stable state than they were immediately after the takeover. Back then, failure to qualify for Champions League might have been deemed as cataclysmic. But now with Glazers having successfully implemented their expansive commercialization strategies have brought down the debts to manageable level and the club will still be able to balance the books even without inflow of revenue from the continentai??i??s premier club competition.
Alok: Why on earth does Shinji Kagawa not get more game time? And please sell Zaha to us, heai??i??s wasting his talent there anyway (I admit weai??i??re full of wingers, but weai??i??d still give him *some* playing time)
Arjun: So says the fan of a team where the player of the season for the last two years canai??i??t get a game!
The thing about Kagawa is that he has failed to grab the admittedly limited opportunities that he has been given till date. At a club like United, he surely did not expect to be started week in week out in his favoured central attacking midfield position when there are players like Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney available. To be a success at United, he has to adapt himself to playing in wide areas as well and this he has not done till now. If the performances donai??i??t improve, I think there is a distinct possibility that Moyes will look to move the playmaker on in the summer.
As far as Zaha is concerned, I really donai??i??t have a definitive answer for that one. From the limited noises that has emanated from inside the club on the matter is that there are question marks over his attitude and mental strength required to play for a club like United. Moyes has a good track record of working with youngsters, so letai??i??s wait and see whether he can bring Zaha around.
Alok: Regarding this game, do you think Moyes will settle for a draw and adopt a defensive looking formation ai??i?? which, to be frank, even SAF did sometimes.
Arjun: A draw at Stamford Bridge is an acceptable result at the best of times. So no point in disguising that this season and without Rooney and van Persie such a result would be much welcome. In fact, it may not be too much of a stretch to say a draw would almost feel like a moral victory for Moyes. But then again, this is not Everton whom Moyes is taking to Stamford Bridge. This is Manchester United ai??i?? a team that has scored 6 goals in their last two league visits to the Bridge. While Moyes will not go all gung ho, expect the likes of Januzaj and Welbeck to still cause the Chelsea defense a few headaches over the course of the afternoon.
Alok: Mourinho could have been the manager at OT had Ferguson chosen him. Your opinion on that?
Arjun: It was always my gut feeling that Mourinho would be the one to take over once Sir Alex eventually stepped down. There is no doubt that Mourinho would have gleefully accepted if the job was offered to him. So at the time, I did find it surprising that Moyes was picked over Mourinho. But as strange as it may sound, given what has transpired till now this season, I am more convinced than ever that the right decision was made. In opting for Moyes, United have stayed true to their culture and heritage, and as a football club that at times is almost as important as short term results. As I stated in the previous response, Moyes will be here for the long haul and eventually he will get it right. So, in short, no regrets over Mourinho. He may be the Special One, but what he is not special enough for Manchester United.
Alok: How do United fans rate Chelseaai??i??s chances at the title this season? (Surely youai??i??d want us to win rather than City winning it, right?)
Arjun: Ah, this one is the toughest of the lot. I donai??i??t know who I want to win. Can all of you please somehow someway mess it up please?
In seriousness, I just canai??i??t see anyone apart from City winning this title. Chelsea are good, but City are simply better. So sorry.
