Jose Mourinho always maintained that he needed a season to shape the Chelsea squad in his image & it looks like he has done exactly that with the signings of Cesc Fabregas & Diego Costa. The summer transfer window is the most crucial part of a football season as this is when managers look to replenish their squads & infuse it with top talent. This is the only time, leaving aside the largely inconsequential winter transfer window, when clubs can address their weaknesses & build upon their strengths, as these top 5 transfer moves will prove.
Diego Costa
Chelsea, in the Roman Abramovich era, have had a mixed record with big money strikers. While there can be no doubting the impact of Didier Drogba, the likes of Andriy Shevchenko, Mateja Kezman & Fernando Torres have proven to be big disappointments.
It was also apparent last season that the strikerai??i??s department was the one area in which the Southwest London club was falling short. Both of these facts made it absolutely imperative that Jose Mourinho make the perfect choice when choosing a striker and it seems as if he has done exactly that with the acquisition of Diego Costa.
The Brazilian-born Spanish striker has been nothing sort of sensational for The Blues so far this season and he has seemingly always made an instant impact in matches. In all the three games Chelsea have played in this season he has scored with his first shot at goal. He also seems to have the physicality to adapt to the demands of the Premier League as well as play as the lone striker with wide men supporting him on either side, a system which Mourinho prefers.
And if Costa can continue slotting in the goals there is no reason why Chelsea cannot be contenders in both England and in Europe.
Cesc Fabregas
Arsenalai??i??s & Barcelonaai??i??s loss is Chelseaai??i??s gain in the case of Cesc Fabregas. The north London club did not want their former star back as they felt that he would be surplus to requirements and impede in the development of Aaron Ramsey. On the other hand, the Spaniard could never really fit into the approach at Barcelona as he was either played as a false no. 9 or in a wide midfield role, two positions in which he never seemed comfortable.
The thing with Fabregas is that he is perfect as a central attacking midfielder and this is the area in which Chelsea were lacking following the departures of Juan Mata & Frank Lampard.
Now that he is being played in his favored position, Fabregas already has four assists this season and has also struck up an instant chemistry with Costa.
The Spaniardai??i??s arrival also makes Chelseaai??i??s spine of Thibaut Courtouis-John Terry-Fabregas-Costa seem one of the most formidable in the league and already comparisons are being drawn to the Petr Cech-Terry-Lampard-Drogba axis that defined the last decade. And if Fabregas can continue orchestrating the Chelsea side then this season could be a defining one for The Blues.
Ander Herrera
Despite the marquee signings of Angel Di Maria & Radamel Falcao there is the feeling that Ander Herrera could prove to be the most important signing of Loius Van Gaalai??i??s first summer with Manchester United. While Di Maria & Falcao can be treated as luxuries the same cannot be said of Herrera.
This is because The Red Devils have never really replaced the likes of Paul Scholes & Roy Keane. Anderson, Tom Cleverley & Owen Hargreaves were touted as potential replacements but all three have fallen by the wayside due to one reason or the other. Michael Carrick, one of the few consistent performers in the middle of the park for United has also been blighted by injuries of late and he is also advancing in years.
All of this make the signing of Herrera seem very essential and important and if he can reproduce the kind of form which has had many touting him as a replacement for Xavi for the Spanish national team then Manchester United could probably have solved one of their great dilemmas of the last few years ai??i?? the lack of a quality central midfielder.
Danny Welbeck
The last time a gangly forward who had potential but a lack of faith shown in him made the switch to Arsenal, Arsene Wenger turned him into a legend. The player in question was a certain Thierry Henry and while it may seem preposterous to compare Danny Welbeck to the Frenchman, Gunners fans must be a little curious to see how this story develops.
Welbeck has pace & technical ability and if Wenger can infuse a certain sense of composure in the lad then he could really be the complete product. What makes Welbeckai??i??s signing even more important is the injury to Olivier Giroud and the lack of a proper backup to the Frenchman.
Welbeck would also be relishing at the prospect of finally playing in his favoured position up front rather than the wide berths which he so frequently occupied at Manchester United. On paper this looks like a marriage made in heaven but only time will tell if he can replicate the success that Henry had with the Gunners.
Bojan Krkic
Lionel Messi will probably never get the chance to prove that he can turn it on a wet & windy Tuesday night at Stoke but Bojan Krkic who for so long was dubbed the Next Messi will, over the course of this season.
Under Tony Pulis, Stoke were a side who were tough to beat especially at The Britannia but they were not a team one would shell out money to watch. But under Mark Hughes they are beginning to transform into a side which wants to play good technical football & this is where Bojan comes in.
The talented 24 year old has now come to a stage in his career where he will have to start delivering and in all honesty Stoke City are the perfect match. At the Britannia, Bojan can perform without any sort of pressure, unlike his time at Barcelona or Milan where he was always looked upon as someone who had the potential to be a club great.
This time there are no excuses for Bojan as he does not have the weight of a hefty transfer price on his shoulder nor is there a lot of completion for places. And if the young Spaniard can shine then the Britannia would be an even worst place to go to on a wet, windy Tuesday night.
