Chelsea could be without Eden Hazard for their Champions League semi-final first leg match with AtlAi??tico Madrid on Tuesday night, after the Belgian attacking midfielder missed a training session at their training ground before the trip to the Vicente CalderA?n.Ai??Hazard was included in a squad of 20 who travelled to Spain
The Belgium midfielder has been sidelined since suffering a calf injury in the second-leg of the quarter-final win over Paris Saint-Germain, but the Blues remain hopeful that arguably their player of the season, recovers in time for the important and tough semi final match. The London side sits five points behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League and thus,the Champions League becomes a more plausible shot at a trophy this season and Hazard’s absence against in-form AtlAi??tico will be a heavy blow to Mourinho.
For him to be in contention for the match, he would obviously need to train with his team and him missing the training only raises further doubts over his participation in the match. Assistant coach Steve Holland admitted the possibility of the Belgian not playing the match.
“To be considered, he obviously needs to train with the group very quickly,” said Holland. “It’s a day-by-day one at the moment.”
Striker Samuel Eto’o was not included in the 20 man squad, due to a knee injury, which gives Jose Mourinho an option of starting former Atletico star Fernando Torres, against his old club. Demba Ba, who has been in good form since his winning goal in the second leg of the quarter final against PSG, of course, remains the other option for the Portuguese boss
Branislav Ivanovic can’t play the match because of suspension, which means that CAi??sar Azpilicueta could be switched from left-back to right-back and Ashley Cole could return. The other possibility is thatAi??David Luiz could be fielded at right-back andAi??Azpilicueta would continue on the left. However, with Matic being ruled out (having played for Benfica earlier in the competition), the possibility of Luiz playing a little in front, as a midfielder, is higher.
Mohamed Salah is the other Chelsea player who will be ineligible for the match, as he has represented Swiss team Basel earlier in the competition.
