Chelsea returned to winning ways as they dispatched Hull City at home by virtue of goals from Eden Hazard and Diego Costa.
Jose Mourinho’s side were beaten by Newcastle United last week, which their first loss of the season, and looked to get control of the game from the 1st minute against Hull City. The Blues started the game really brightly and were rewarded in the 7th minute as a wonderful cross by Brazilian playmaker Oscar was finished by Hazard. The Belgian isn’t really known for scoring with his head, but couldn’t miss as he only had to beat the goalkeeper.
Hull City tried to respond positively and had a few half-chances, but in truth, Steve Bruce’s men never threatened stand-in goalkeeper PetrAi??Cech. Chelsea’s second goal came in the 68th minute after some neat interplay by Branislav Ivanovic and Eden Hazard which resulted in Costa finding the back of the net. Before Chelsea scored the second goal, Hull City midfielder was sent off for a dangerous tackle on defender Filipe Luis which made things difficult of them as they were already trailing by a goal.
The game did not have too many moments of brilliance and was a little bit scrappy as there were only three shots in total, all coming from Chelsea.Ai??However, it did provide us with a lot of talking points in terms of refereeing decisions as Chris Foy was accused of “not doing his job” by Hull City’s manager Steve Bruce.
Bruce felt aggrieved by the fact that Gary Cahill stayed on the pitch despite a blatant dive which should have earned him a second yellow card. Cahill was booked in the first half and tried to win a penalty early on in the second half in what looked like a dive. However, he wasn’t punished for his antics despite Chris Foy showing yellow cards to Costa and Willian for the same offense, something which angered the Hull City boss, ai???Iai??i??ve been asked if Cahill should have gone and the simple answer is yes, especially given the referee has booked two people for simulation or diving. The likes of Oscar, Hazard or Willian are running at pace so the smallest connection can bring them over, but this is Englandai??i??s centre-half.”
Bruce was also unimpressed by Cahill’s first-half tackle on Sone Aluko that earned him a yellow card, “It could have been a red card, his first-half challenge on [Sone] Aluko. That was reckless and dangerous. But when you watch [the dive] over, itai??i??s like something out of Swan Lake. Itai??i??s that blatant, that obvious what heai??i??s trying to do.”
Mourinho denies that Cahill tried to con the referee
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho remained adamantAi??that Cahill did not dive as he felt that there was some contact between him and the two Hull City playersAi??Tom Huddlestone and David Meyler.
He said, “I didn’t see it on TV because I was far away but I don’t believe Cahill dive.Ai??If you tell me I’m wrong, and he dived, then something happened. They blocked his run, there was a touch or he lost his balance, but that big, honest guy, I don’t believe he dived in the opposition box.”
Mourinho’s side were not at their sparkling best, but the Portuguese was happy with the win as they controlled the game and picked up the three points that takes them to a tally of 39 points in 16 games,Ai??”We didn’t play especially well but we played well enough for everybody connected with Chelsea – supporters, players and staff – to be calm, because the game was always under control.
