Former Chelsea FC midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has insisted that Jose Mourinho pulled the plug on his move to Borussia Dortmund after failing to sign Robert Lewandowski.
Robert Lewandowski was one of Mourinhoai??i??s prime targets at the start of this season as he looked to strengthen his forward line. But Chelsea failed to materialize the deal with Dortmund unwilling to sell him despite him being in the last year of his contract with the German club. They preferred to run it down and let him leave the club for free next season, while Lewandowski negotiated a move to Bayern Munich and it his move to the reigning European champions next season was officially confirmed earlier this season.
Chelsea not only failed to sign Lewandowski, but also failed with their attempt to bring Radamel Falcao, who joined Monaco, and then Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, who signed a new long term deal with the Red Devils few days back. This meant that Mourinho and Chelsea had to settle with an ageing Samuel Etoai??i??o as their back-up option, and now it seems that the whole experience left a bad taste in the mouth for the former Real Madrid manager.
Kevin De Bruyne has now revealed that Mourinho refused to sanction his move to Borussia Dortmund earlier this season, which was almost as a retaliative decision due to Dortmundai??i??s refusal to negotiate for Lewandowski.
“Mourinho said noai??? ai??i?? The former Chelsea midfielder said in an interview.
When asked whether Dortmundai??i??s unwillingness to negotiate with Chelsea regarding the transfer of Lewandowski played any part in this decision, De Bruyne said:
“That’s what they told me and also my advisor.
“But that is professional football.
“Where there is a lot of money changing hands, there is also a lot of politics.”
Kevin de Bruyne had a spell to forget at the London club which he joined back in 2012, but after loan spells at his former club Genk and then at Werder Bremen, he returned to the club in the summer. But after making just two starts for Chelsea in the league, it was clear that he has fallen down the pecking order following the arrival of Willian and Andre Schurrle, and wasnai??i??t part of Mourinhoai??i??s future plans. With a desperate need for regular first team football ahead of the World Cup in the Brazil, the Belgium international had no other alternative other than a departure from Stamford Bridge. He finally joined Wolfsburg in the winter transfer window and has already made six starts for them in the Bundesliga. But it could have been a bit different for the 22-year-old, as he was seemingly denied the opportunity to work under someone like Jurgen Klopp by Jose Mourinho.
