Chelsea FC finished the season trophyless but it was definitely not a ‘season to forget’ as many seem to think. 2013-14 was a season of transition, progression and evolution as Jose Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge for a second era.
2012/13 had been another typical Chelsea season – big price signings, a torrid November-December period, a managerial casualty and somehow ending up with a trophy in the bag.
Pre-season saw Jose Mourinho swing back in through the doors at Cobham, 9 years after he first did so and fresh hopes of challenging for the Premier League title after two seasons of being spectators. There were, however, also calls for long term stability from fans a bit tired of the managerial carousel that ensued at Chelsea, as well as the injection of more youth into a team that was still relatively dependent on Terry, Lampard, Cech and Cole over the last 2-3 seasons. There weren’t any notable departures over the summer, other than Courtois returning back to Atletico and Lukaku and Victor Moses moving to Merseyside – all on loan. We saw Jose playing footsie with Wayne Rooney all summer, being led up a road which eventually saw the Man United man remain in Manchester and even sign a bumper new deal later in the season. As a result, Chelsea were not left with many other striking options in the market and signed veteran Samuel Eto’o on a one-year-contract – in addition to 40-year-old Mark Schwarzer moving from neighbours Fulham for free, German Andre Schurrle forAi??A?18 million, Dutchman Marco van Ginkel forAi??A?8 million and in a controversial steal from Tottenham’s clutches – Willian forAi??A?30 million.
In retrospect, we could say Jose’s first Premier League game set the tone for Chelsea in general this season; Lampard missing a penalty early in the game – alluding to Chelsea’s slip-ups against the ‘weaker’ teams – but scoring a much harder goal in a 30-yard freekick – Chelsea’s ability to rise to the occasion vs the bigger teams -, Oscar starting brightly but fading as the game progressed and Juan Mata playing no part at all.
The Super Cup vs Bayern Munich saw Chelsea take the lead twice in the game from Torres in the first half and Eden Hazard in extra time, but conceded twice and when a Drogba-esque responsibility was handed to Romelu Lukaku, the youngster failed to remain composed under pressure and took a tame penalty easily collected by Neuer to give Bayern the win.
The early months of the season saw an Oscar in brilliant form, scoring every other game and playing a big part in Chelsea’s on field performances. His willingness to do the dirty work and function as a third midfielder deep in front of the pivot saw him being preferred by Mourinho over Juan Mata – Chelsea’s incumbent two-time Player of the Year – who functioned better in a free role behind the striker. After an early loss vs Basel, the Blues’ Champions League campaign seemed on track, picking up wins vs Steaua Bucuresti and Schalke, with Eden Hazard rising in form after Jose Mourinho’s prolonged confidence in him despite his disappointing form.
The inconsistency continued in December, a comeback win vs Southampton was followed by two occasions where the usually leak-proof Chelsea defence conceded three times to each of Sunderland and Stoke – winning the former and losing the latter. However, Sunderland would get their revenge later in the month when they went on to knock Chelsea out of the Capitol One Cup. That loss, seemed to revitalise the Blues on a domestic front, as they drew 0-0 Ai??vs league leaders Arsenal, a 1-0 win vs Swansea as well as a superb 2-1 comeback victory vs Liverpool on Boxing Day. Eden Hazard continued to shine, scoring vs all of Sunderland, Swansea and Liverpool.
The new year started with a 3-0 win vs Southampton – a result affected heavily by Jose Mourinho’s substitutes and a match that would turn out to be Juan Mata’s last for the club. A great servant over the last 2.5 years, Mata suffered a loss in form, failing to adapt to Mourinho’s system as well as Oscar and Hazard had and growing frustrated as whole. The man brought on for Mata in the 53rd minute – Oscar, set up two goals and scored the other himself.
Chelsea continued their good form and picked up a 5th consecutive win vs Moyes’ Manchester United at the Bridge, courtesy of a Samuel Eto’o hat-trick as well as progressing past Derby and Stoke in the FA Cup. Their winning run came to a halt at home vs West Ham where they had 39 shots at goal but failed to score, pushing Mourinho to allege West Ham of playing ’19th century football’ though he admitted he was being hypocritical. Allardyce could not care less, jubilant at having ‘out-tacticked’ the Special One.
The winter window saw the expected departure of Juan Mata to Manchester United in a deal worthAi??A?37.1 million, though it was surprising to see Chelsea sell to a rival – even if they were not having the best of seasons. Another frozen figure – Kevin de Bruyne left for Germany for aroundAi??A?18 million; both these sales allowed Chelsea to bring Nemanja Matic – who had blossomed into a world-class defensive midfielder – forAi??A?21 million as well as Egyptian Mohamed Salah and exciting French defender Kurt Zouma forAi??A?11million andAi??A?12 million respectively and still muster a profit.
Matic took absolutely no time getting re-adjusted to the Premier League and on his full debut, produced a Man of the Match performance vs Man City, which saw the Blues come away from the Etihad with both three points as well as a clean sheet – becoming the first team this season to prevent the eventual champions from scoring at home. Eden Hazard excelled in a counter-attacking capacity at the Etihad and continued at home vs Newcastle, scoring his first hattick for Chelsea. City would later – like Sunderland – avenge league defeat with a cup victory in the FA Cup, knocking Chelsea out, leaving them only the Champions League and Premier League to play for.
March saw Schurrle score a hattrick vs Fulham and a 4-0 Chelsea victory vs Spurs that owed more credit to the Spurs’ defence than the Chelsea attack as well as a second leg 2-0 win vs Galatasaray to put Chelsea in the quarters of the Champions League. However, the 14-game unbeaten Premier League run culminated in a controversial loss at Aston Villa that saw Willian, Ramires and Mourinho sent off. The woes continued as a John Terry own goal contributed to a Chelsea loss at Selhurst Park against a Pulis-revitalised Palace.
Sandwiched between those two losses was a 6-0 drubbing of Arsenal on a special occasion for Wenger that could not have turned more sour – experiencing his biggest ever loss to his biggest ever rival in his 1000th game in charge of Arsenal, all the frailties of his Arsenal side exposed to perfection.
A fantastic comeback win in the Champions League vs PSG after trailing 3-1 in the first leg underlined Chelsea’s strength in big, crunch games but their loss to Sunderland (Jose Mourinho’s first at Stamford Bridge) and later, Atletico Madrid showed the inconsistency of this Chelsea side and their inability to break down compact defences – a tactic they themselves had used to suffocate the more free-flowing sides – like at Anfield, where a below-par Chelsea team came away with a 2-0 win against the league leaders to shake Liverpool off their tracks which seemed destined to lead to the Premier League title.
Best Player – Eden Hazard
Hazard did not have the best start to this season but has risen in influence and importance to Chelsea as the season has progressed. Over the November to March period, Hazard was unplayable and exhibited confidence – almost sure to score every time he cut in from the left to shoot with his right foot. Producing match-changing performances vs Man City, Man United, Liverpool and Galatasaray, Hazard has started marrying consistency to his world-class ability. His work ethic has been criticised by Jose Mourinho recently but in comparison to last season, even this side of his game has improved considerably. Mourinho looks to make him his next big protege a la Lampard and even when handing him his Chelsea Player of the Year trophy, told Hazard that he expects even more from the Belgian next season and a hug shared between the two says the bond is not fractured as media outlets report. Hazard’s failure to deliver vs Atletico showed the importance he has in this Chelsea attack and the arrival of a new striker and hopefully, a recovery in form for Oscar should see some of that burden be alleviated. Likened to Cristiano Ronaldo, Hazard has had a very good season but not sans flaws. While he looks to have a good World Cup with Belgium, the 23-year-old will no doubt also be looking to improve himself next season.
Most Disappointing Player –Ai??Ramires
In pre-season and last season, Ramires seemed like the engine of Chelsea’s play, with his endless energy and pace up and down the field. He chipped in with vital goals and crosses too, but this season has only been a shadow of all that. Especially with the arrival of Matic – a more composed defensive midfielder, and Willian – more tireless and more useful in attack, Ramires does not seem as special as he was. His passing has been very astray and his finishing, horrendous – hardly like the player who produced a sublime chip over Victor Valdes at the Camp Nou. He has been prone to rash tackling, late challenges and a failure to keep his cool – all of which has resulted in 13 yellow cards and two red cards for the Brazilian.
Honourable Mentions
The entire Chelsea backline of Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill and Azpilicueta deserve more credit than they receive. With a team that does not score many goals, maintaining the best goal difference behind City and Liverpool owes a lot to the immaculate defence, that has only conceded once vs both Man City and Liverpool. The quartet have been extremely disciplined in organisation and seem to give their all to prevent the opposition from scoring at any cost. Azpilicueta in special has become an absolute fan favorite for his undying determination and passion on field, leading to Jose Mourinho even saying a team of 11 Azpilicuetas could win the Champions League.
Credit also to Nemanja Matic, who is putting up a good bid in being called the league’s best defensive midfielder. Completely solid in defence, calm in possession and with vision and variety in passing, he seems to be exactly what Chelsea have missed in the pivot these last few seasons. However, he would still probably like with a better partner in the pivot, more capable of unlocking defences from deep.
Samuel Eto’o was signed as a last resort in the summer, but since has scored in quite a few vital games, such against Liverpool, Man United, Spurs as well as Galatasaray and Arsenal. He did not end his season in the best of ways – conceding the penalty which assured Atletico of the win at Stamford Bridge, but nonetheless has given the Chelsea fans quite a few memories to cherish.
Most Memorable Match – Manchester City 0-1 Chelsea
City were looking invincible at home at this point, having battered all opposition who visited, but lo behold arrived Jose Mourinho and his team, who not only neutralised City’s attacking strength but also had more than a few counterattacking opportunities to score more than what they did. The 6-0 thrashing of Arsenal comes a close second.
Most Disappointing Match – Chelsea 1-2 Sunderland
Jose Mourinho’s seemingly everlasting record at home in the Premier League ended not against Liverpool, not against Arsenal, or Man City or Man United – but against relegation battling Sunderland. In a match marred by contentious refereeing calls and eventual fines for Jose and assistant Rui Faria for ‘sarcasm’, Jose’s record of never having lost a single game at home in the league came to an end, losing to a team managed by an ex-Blue in Gus Poyet and the winning penalty scored by an ex-Blue in Fabio Borini.
Goal of the Season – Fernando Torres v Bayern Munich
An example of perfection in counter attack not bettered by many. The ball is played to the feet of Eden Hazard, who manages to wriggle out, away from his marker and move forward before releasing Andre Schurrle on the right flank. The German plays a first time low cross across goal to Fernando Torres who is in the right position – for once in his Chelsea career – to finish off with a neat side-footed half volley beyond Manuel Neuer.
Conclusion
Ultimately, progresses have been made in the evolution of Eden Hazard as well as the shift of the ‘core’ of the team from Terry, Lampard, Cole and the like to Hazard, Oscar, Matic, Azpilicueta and Cahill. The latter all have also picked up invaluable lessons from the Champions League semifinal journey, only adding to their experience. The Chelsea defence has also been back at its best after a few shaky seasons. There has been a shift from dependence on Mata and Hazard last term to a more collective approach this season, where the loss of the club’s best player has not had an extremely profound effect on fortunes. Mourinho’s willingness to bench his old favorites in favour of younger players shows his aims of building a future for Chelsea and ‘honing the little horse’. And all this while, Chelsea have not compromised on remaining competitive, even looking like title favorites for a few weeks before they stumbled over.
The summer should see the arrival of Diego Costa – for whom a deal has been agreed in the region ofAi??Ai??A?32 million if Sky sources are to be believed. All of Eto’o, Torres and Ba could well leave the Bridge and this might open up a place for Romelu Lukaku – who has evolved in his loan with Everton – to join the first team and play more regularly. The future of John Terry and Frank Lampard seems to be at Chelsea for at least another year, while Ashley Cole looks slightly more likely to be released. Chelsea will be in the market for a leftback too, as Azpilicueta looks to move back to his more natural rightback position while Thibaut Courtois is likely to return to his parent club as one of the best – if not the best – goalkeepers in the world at the moment. Next season should definitely see the fruits of the developments made this season as far as Chelsea are concerned.
