The former Southampton defender was linked with a move to Chelsea before he eventually joined Manchester United this summer. But Jose Mourinho insists that the Blues have dodged a bullet and that succumbing to Shawai??i??s demands would have destabilized the dressing room atmosphere.
Luke Shaw moved to Manchester United from Southampton this summer in a A?27m transfer deal. The 19-year-old signed a four-year contract with the Red Devils and is being paid A?100,000 a week. This contract made him the highest paid teenager in the world, something which also forced Chelsea to pull-out of the race to sign him.
Chelsea were heavily linked with a move for the England international in this transfer window as they looked for a new left back following Ashley Coleai??i??s departure. But the London club pulled out of the race due to Shawai??i??s high demands.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that Shawai??i??s demands were over the top and believes that his signing could have destabilised the dressing room and their effort to remain within financial fair play.
“To pay a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, for Luke Shaw, we are dead. We would have killed our stability with financial fair play, and killed the stability in our dressing room.
“Because when you pay that much to a 19-year-old kid – a good player, fantastic player – but when you pay that amount of money, the next day we would have had players knocking on our door.
“They would have been saying ‘How is it possible I play 200 games for this club, won this and that, yet a 19-year-old comes here and gets more money than I get?’
“It would’ve killed immediately our balance, and we couldn’t allow that.” ai??i?? The Chelsea manager said.
Mourinho also believes that they got the much better deal in signing Felipe Luis, who already has the experience of performing at the biggest stage and winning titles.
“I don’t criticise another club for paying it. They can pay what they want. I don’t have any comment about it.
“But for my club we can say it would be very negative for us, especially when we can say Felipe is much less expensive.
“Filipe played for Brazil, won titles in Spain, won European competitions, played in the Champions League final. Yet this guy is much cheaper than an English young lad.
“And is he good for our average wages? Yes he is. Sometimes you have to make decisions.” ai??i?? He added.
