Chelsea FC striker Romelu Lukaku has reiterated his desire to leave the club in the summer and will look to use the World Cup to prove himself.
The 21-year-old forward has failed to grab a place in the Chelsea squad since joining them in 2011 from Anderlecht. He arrived with lot of expectations at Stamford Bridge and was expected to eventually replace club legend Didier Drogba. But the Belgium international was sent out on loan for the last two seasons, at West Bromwich Albion and Everton respectively, and despite proving his goal scoring attribute during these spells, Lukaku faces an uncertain future at the club.
Jose Mourinhoai??i??s decision to send him on loan to Everton last season was questioned by fans and experts as Chelsea lacked goal scoring strikers in their ranks. Mourinho favoured Samuel Etoai??i??o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba over the Belgium international and this faith was misplaced. The Chelsea trio scored a meagre total of 19 goals in the Premier League among themselves, while Lukaku amassed 15 in just 29 starts. The lack of a proper goal scorer upfront proved to be the biggest hindrance in Chelseaai??i??s title challenge as they finished behind Manchester City and Liverpool.
Despite Lukaku proving himself at Everton once again, report suggests that Mourinho could once again look to send him out on loan in the summer. Chelsea have been heavily linked with Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa and with the imminent arrival of the Spanish international, Lukaku will be largely restricted to fight for a place on the bench with Fernando Torres and Demba Ba. But the former Anderlecht striker is unlikely to settle for that role next season as he looks for regular first team action and will force a move elsewhere if he doesnai??i??t receive that Chelsea.
Lukaku, whose contract at Stamford Bridge runs for two more years, has expressed his desire to use the upcoming World Cup as stage to prove himself during the transfer market.
“You know Chelsea: every year they buy a new top striker.
“I remember me coming into the dressing room last year and seeing Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba and going: ‘Whoah! What’s happening here?’
“But no problem. Many clubs are interested in me and at this stage I have to look to myself.
“I have to play a good World Cup. That’s very interesting for all the players looking for a transfer, and I must be one of them. Chelsea know my point of view.” ai??i?? The Chelsea striker said in an interview.
A lot of European clubs are monitoring his situation at Stamford Bridge with the likes of Atletico Madrid, AS Roma, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund linked with a move for him. Atletico are reportedly looking to replace Chelsea bound Diego Costa with Romelu Lukaku, while other reports suggest that Jose Mourinho could use him in a deal to sign AS Roma defender Mehdi Benatia. Chelsea could be left to rue their decision on the future if they do part ways with Lukaku in the summer.
