Before 15th of March, Chelsea were in a very good position, as far as reclaiming the Premier League title was concerned. They were 9 points ahead of Manchester City, having played three games more, but a bird in hand has always been considered a better catch than two in bush. Ergo, points on the board were better than those on the offering. They were 6 points ahead of both Liverpool and Arsenal, having played a game more. The fact that they had merely two games remaining against top opposition (Arsenal home and Liverpool away), while others had significantly tougher fixtures, also made the West London team favorites to lift the trophy come May. Moreover, with Mourinho at the helm, the team was expected to prevail over any difficulties that would have come their way, showing the mentality and fortitude of champions-elect.
The beautiful thing, however, about this sport is its sheer unpredictable nature. Perhaps there was always a reason why Jose Mourinho always downplayed his team’s chances in the title race, claiming that they aren’t ready yet, that they will compete next year. Perhaps there was truth in what he kept saying week in, week out, rather than there being a malicious plan in place to throw off the media.
On either side of that game against Arsenal, Chelsea lost the plot first against Aston Villa and then against Crystal Palace. This coincided with the best football that Liverpool has played in years, in addition to the sustained consistency shown by Manchester City. As of today, Chelsea have self destructed their campaign to find themselves at the mercy of others, if they are to lay hands on the trophy. Anyway, there are still things that Chelsea can do or rather hope in the next month or so.
Defeat Liverpool at Anfield
Chelsea have, this season, drawn their away games at Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham but won at Manchester City. Their away record is anything but impressive this season anyway. Now they face a daunting task of winning their second last game at Anfield. Liverpool are presently 2 points ahead of Chelsea and assuming both teams do what they have to do in the remaining games, the result of this head-on collision stands to play a crucial role in the respective fortunes of both the teams. The last time these two teams played each other, Chelsea managed to register a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge to finish the year on a high. At that point in time, that was Liverpool’s second consecutive league defeat and Chelsea were in the process of closing the gap to Arsenal. The situation, today, has turned on its head, with Liverpool winning their last 9 league games to reach the summit of Premier League. There are still 22 days to this fixture and a lot can change by then, but two things are certain – if Chelsea are to win the league, they must defeat Liverpool at Anfield and it won’t be easy.
Hope Liverpool defeats Manchester City
Chelsea and Liverpool can do all they want, defeat one another and still Manchester City can go all the way and claim the title. Unless, of course, Liverpool can halt their march and defeat them at Anfield on the 13th of April. That result will not only help Liverpool, but will also benefit Chelsea by closing the gap to merely a point (considering City win their two games in hand). Manuel Pellegrini’s team have won 6 of their last 8 league matches and are also on a roll, so it will take a mammoth effort from Brendan Rodgers and his team to tame the blue half of Manchester. Defeating Tottenham 4-0 is one thing, but a victory over City is a different ball game altogether. One is is for certain though – Chelsea will firmly be in the red corner on that day.
Grow a pair
Post the defeat at Crystal Palace, when journalists asked Jose Mourinho about the quality his Chelsea side needed, the Portuguese manager didn’t mince any words and wrote “B*lls” on a white piece of paper that he had in his hands. This may come across as harsh criticism from the manager, but he couldn’t be more correct in his assessment of what the team lacks. There have been two Chelseas on display this season, in a clear case of split personality. In their first avatar, they are an irresistible team that can not only tear Arsenal to shreds but also go to City and claim a season-defining win at the Etihad. Against better opponents that attack, Chelsea use their incredible pace on the counter to destroy them at break-neck pace. The picture drastically changes against teams that are content on sitting back, defending in numbers and settling for a draw. Chelsea just capitulate in such scenarios. There’s no other way to put it. Against Palace, they knew how crucial three points were, especially with both Liverpool and City having tough games, they knew they just can’t afford to lose or even draw, and they also knew that champions are made not by going through the motions and by taken onus and delivering when it matters the most. Yet, they sank without a trace. If the West Londoners are to take the fight to the last day, they must grow a pair and prove that they have what is takes to become champions.
Get Eto’o back on the field
Jose Mourinho has lost all faith in the abilities of Fernando Torres and Demba Ba. So much so that, he refuses to even recognize them as real strikers! Samuel Eto’o, on the other hand, has done better than his counterparts, scoring 8 goals in the league, and has turned out to be one of the better transfers in the Premier League this season. He is, however, still out because of the injury he sustained against Arsenal, but not before scoring a goal. For the sake of Chelsea’s chances, it’s imperative that Eto’o returns to the fold and gives Chelsea a reasonable striker to field in the remaining matches. Furthermore, he has forged a good understanding with the attacking midfielders at Chelsea, especially Eden Hazard, and it will do their confidence a world of good if the wily, old Cameroonian is back to lead the line for Chelsea.
Inspire Eden Hazard
This season Eden Hazard has been absolutely magical, but even his magic is beginning to fade at a time when Chelsea need their mercurial Belgian the most. It may be because Mourinho has over relied on him this season, leading to fatigue or a genuine loss of form, but the consistency that saw him emerge as Chelsea’s trump card is just not there, especially in games away from home against inferior opposition. It doesn’t mean that Eden has been poor; in fact it’s quite the contrary as the winger has still been Chelsea’s best player even in most poor performances, but that’s not good enough for a player of his caliber. He aspires to emulate Ronaldo and his ilk and that won’t happens unless he is able to power his team to victories in matches that are certainly heading towards a draw or worse, on a very consistent basis.
At the start of the season, Mourinho challenged him to work harder and become the best player in the world and the Belgian responded by taking the league by storm. He got past defenders using his trickery, if not his sheer pace; by his close ball control, if not by his vision. What was more impressive was the fact that he dis all that without actually compromising the defensive setup of the side, by tracking back and making key interceptions himself higher up the pitch.
A time has come for Mourinho to inspire, motive and reinvigorate his best man again. He is after all the focal point of the Chelsea attack, their primary weapon, their inspiration.
