After an entire season of harping about being a squad in transition and the very Jose Mourinho-esque analogies of horses and ai???heggsai??i?? and ai???homelettesai??i??, Chelsea seem to have a complete squad at last and as Jose Mourinho himself said, will be looking at the title and only the title this season. There are not many excuses to be made this season, with the Blues amply strengthening over the summer.
Squad Analysis
Goalkeepers: Thibaut Courtois, Petr Cech, Mark Schwarzer
Starting from the back, Chelsea at the moment, probably have the best lineup of goalkeepers. They have managed to hold on to Thibaut Courtois, the best young goalkeeper in the world at the moment as he agreed to come back to his parent club after three fruiftul years at the Vicente Calderon. Petr Cech will go down as one of the best ever goalkeepers to play in the Premier League and though he looked slightly shaky last season, is still a world-class goalkeeper at only 31 years old. Their third choice is a goalkeeper many Premier League teams would die to have as first choice – veteran Mark Schwarzer who was very dependable towards the tail end of last season when Petr Cech was injured. Jose Mourinho has given away no hints as to who will be the No. 1 at Chelsea this season, only openly challenging the master and the apprentice to fight for their places, though he praised both. This is a position still very much open to guess, as it is unclear whether Chelsea will even have a set hierarchy or rotate between the two depending on game/competition. Either way, this is a weirdly fantastic dilemma to be in for Mourinho, with two fantastic goalkeepers.
Defenders: John Terry, Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta, Filipe Luis, Branislav Ivanovic, Kurt Zouma, Nathan Ake, Andreas Christensen
Chelsea and Atletico had the best defences in their respective leagues: both put together only conceding 3 more goals than Liverpool did, so what would you naturally expect when two defences like that unite? Chelsea brought in Atletico’s Brazilian leftback and Courtois’ good friend Filipe Luis too, allowing Cesar Azpilicueta – who was a better leftback than most leftbacks in the Premier League – to play on his stronger, more natural right side. Gary Cahill and John Terry are set to keep their partnership going while Branislav Ivanovic provides a good option as a backup right back and centre back. Also in the ranks are youngsters, St Etienne recruit Kurt Happy Zouma (No, that really is his middle name) and stylish Danish centre back Andreas Christensen, who starred for the U21s last season. There is also Nathan Ake, who is a utility man of sorts, being able to play at leftback, centreback and in midfield. Jose Mourinho’s teams have always had a reputation for being solid at the back and this season should essentially not be any different at all.
Midfielders: Cesc Fabregas, Oscar, Eden Hazard, Nemanja Matic, Andre Schurrle, Willian, Ramires, John Obi Mikel, Mohamed Salah, Marco van Ginkel
One of the shock moves of the window saw ex-Arsenal captain and idol Cesc Fabregas move back to the Premier League but to the blue of West London. Jose Mourinho described him as the ‘missing piece’ of the Chelsea puzzle and a ‘number 7 – who is not a no. 6 nor a no. 8′ in midfield and this is accurate. Having already brought back Nemanja Matic – who has made an instant impact – to shore up the midfield defensively, Chelsea looked out of depths against teams that defended deep since the pivot was not able to provide creativity, with van Ginkel injured, Lampard aging and Ramires just unable. Fabregas’ signing makes sense to Chelsea on many levels, including the fact that he is homegrown and a set-piece specialist – already scoring his first Chelsea goal by dispatching a fabulous freekick vs Vitesse.
Furthermore, the return of Marco van Ginkel is significant as he can play in any of the three midfield positions in a 4-3-3 and offers dynamism. Chelsea do of course still have the services of Ramires, who we believe could still be used when the opposition needs to be pressed high or hounded. As far as the attacking midfield is concerned, two positions are pretty much set in stone, in Eden Hazard for the left wing and Oscar down the middle. The right wing is still up for grabs between World Cup winner Schurrle and Willian, though it is likely they will be rotated based on opposition. This is not particularly a position Chelsea have a dearth in anyway, with Fabregas also being able to play the No 10 role if required. A midfield as strong as this should be enough to see Chelsea progress significantly in league and cup, though it will be interesting to see if Hazard and Oscar are more mature now and can retain their consistency of top performances throughout the season.
Forwards: Diego Costa, Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres
In an interview to BT Sport, Mourinho admitted that Chelsea had been looking at Costa since last season but felt this season would be best to bring him in – the lack of striker did cost them in the end but at least they have their man now. Menacing, strong, fearless and with a certain hunger that no Chelsea striker has exhibited in the last few years, Costa is a Jose Mourinho striker, if there was one. Powerful dribbler, but skilful with a good shot in him, the Brazilian-turned-Spaniard seems to be very much at home in a Chelsea shirt, having already scored two great goals and set up two in pre-season. He has also sparked up a great understanding with compatriot Fabregas and with the trio of Hazard, Oscar and Schurrle or Willian behind him, and thus should have no problem in receiving service and providing it too. He could be the 32 million that wins the title for Jose Mourinho.
However, his signing and the non-assurance of a starting place has led to Lukaku being shipped off to Everton and there is a very bleak flipside to this. If Costa has an injury, Chelsea have but Drogba who is older than he was and not the striker he was, as well as Torres.. who is well, Torres. This is something to ponder for Jose Mourinho and though Chelsea have one of the better medical teams in the league, having another decent striker willing to play backup will not hurt the team. At this point of the summer, though, it does look unlikely and every single Chelsea fan will go to bed muttering a little prayer that Diego Costa leads a happy and healthy life.
Transfer Summary
Tactical Analysis
Essentially, this would be the strongest Chelsea line-up on paper.
This is much like the on-field 4-3-3 Chelsea played in Mourinho’s first era, though Essien was a definitely different profile of player to Fabregas. The most important player in this formation, though, is Oscar. His ability to play deeper and tackle as well as move forward to press means a bit more freedom in Fabregas’ play as the two switch between the CM/CAM positions. Hazard will look to cut in more than often and overall, there will be a very fluid interchanging of positions between the front 5 as we saw a glimpse of vs Fenerbahce. This is ideally what Jose will/should go with against most teams.
However, against Ai??teams that cause central overcrowding or have more formidable attacks, Mourinho could use a traditional 4-3-3 with either of Ramires or van Ginkel slotting into midfield and one of Fabregas or Oscar being dropped or Oscar moving out wide on the right like he did for Brazil. This allows for more defensive stability and the easy transition from a 3-man midfield to a pivot with an attacking midfielder. The defence would be more compact in such scenarios too and the two wingers would be expected to win the ball high as well as drop back to cover.
Player to Watch: Eden Hazard (#10)
Predictions
Chelsea have been fast and efficient in their transfer window. Unlike last season’s ultimately unsuccessful flirtation with Wayne Rooney, Chelsea have been like trained marksmen, setting their target on a player and finishing the deal smoothly. With Man City, they have the best squad in the league on paper and should be going for nothing but the top of the table when the season kicks off in a week’s time. Jose Mourinho has not been a prolific Cup winner at Chelsea and will be looking to change that this season too – his squad definitely has the depth to help him do that. The Portuguese is only 50 but has the chance to become the first man in footballing history to win Big-Ears with three different clubs, from three different countries. His ‘incomplete’ Chelsea side were only one step away from the final last season, but will definitely be a strong favorite to win it this season. However, if Chelsea somehow, end the season without at least one of the Premier League or the Champions League, the future may not bode extremely well for the newly-self-christened Happy & Motivated One.
