Chelsea have reportedly begun talks with Sporting Lisbon, over a summer move for Liverpool target Marcos Rojo.
Chelsea are looking at Sporting Lisbon full back Marcos Rojo as the man they want to bring in to replace departing Ashley Cole, according to reports.
The 24 year old has been a target for Liverpool and Juventus had also expressed their interest in the player.
Rojo is currently with Argentina at the World Cup and has been Sabellaai??i??s preferred left back. Only 24 years of age, the player has cemented his place in the countryai??i??s starting line-up.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola hadAi??reportedAi??as early as March that Liverpool scouts were present for the Sporting Lisbon and Porto match were there to watch 24 year old. The Reds later shifted their focusAi?? on Sevillaai??i??s Alberto Moreno and came very close to snapping up the 21 year old Spaniard. But when that deal fell through, reports suggested that Marcos Rojo would become their prime full-back target.
But it seems like Liverpoolai??i??s pursuit of the player is going to be hijacked by Chelsea. The Blues are looking for a top quality left-back after Ashley Cole left the club at the completion of his contract. Through the course of last season Chelsea played Cezar Azpilicueta, who is traditionally a right-back in the left-back position. Even though the Spaniard didnai??i??t fail to deliver, Chelsea would want to bring in a conventional left back for next season. Jose Mourinhoai??i??s side has been linked with a host of defenders and were rumoured to be close to signing Atletico Madridai??i??s Filipe Luis. But the links to the player have died out as the Madrid club donai??i??t want to lose out on another prized member of their successful season.
It is now reported that Chelsea have moved ahead of the Merseyside club in negotiations for the Argentinean international and are willing to submit a bid in the region of A?15m to get their man.
The versatile Argentina international can play both as a left back and a central defender and has the ability to play further up as a wingback as well.Ai??He would have been exactly what Liverpool needed as defence has been a huge problem for last seasonai??i??s league runners up. These reports of Chelsea closing in on the player means Brendan Rodgers will have to shift his attention and target another full back.
Meanwhile Daily Mail have reported that Roma have opened talks with Ashley Cole and are offering the defender a two year deal. The player is travelling to the Italian capital to hold talks. The ex-England international was also linked with a move to French giants AS Monaco and several MLSAi??franchises. Barcelona, AC Milan and Liverpool were also monitoring his situation.
