Cesar Azpilicueta has been a revelation at Chelsea. He has grown from strength to strength under Jose Mourinho and is possibly a crucial part of the club’s future.
When Cesar ai???Daveai??i?? Azpilicueta signed for Chelsea on 24th August, 2012, fans were unsure about what to expect from the former Marseille and Osasuna full back. In fact, his arrival at Stamford Bridge was somewhat overshadowed by a more familiar name who joined at the same time, Victor Moses from Wigan. Known as a smart and quick footed full back at Marseille, Azpilicueta has grown in strength after his A?6.5m transfer, impressing many, including Jose Mourinho himself. It is testament to Azpilicuetaai??i??s development as a player that he has managed to displace stalwart Ashley Cole at left back, despite playing in an unfamiliar position.
The 24 year old Spaniard rose through the ranks at Osasunaai??i??s youth system and impressed at an early age, establishing himself as a regular right back in the side at the age of 18, after initially playing in midfield. In the international youth setup, he helped Spain lift the 2007 Under-19 Euro Championship. A ai??i??7m transfer to French big guns Marseille soon followed in 2010 and, despite missing 6 months due to an ACL rupture in his knee, he helped Marseille win 2 French Cups and 2 Super Cups in his 68 senior appearances over 2 years with the club.
In his first season at Chelsea, Azpilicueta found it hard to break into the main team initially, with a string of substitute appearances. It was only halfway through the season, once Rafael Benitez was appointed that he got regular starts at right back, with Branislav Ivanovic being utilised as a centre half. He was a steady, if unspectacular, performer, filling in ably for 24 league starts and a total of 46 appearances for the Blues.
Azpilicueta not only provided adequate defensive cover, but proved to be effective as an attacking option as well. He assisted 4 times and delivered 31 key passes in all competitions. In Chelseaai??i??s Europa League success, Azpilicueta started most games as a wide player, leading his teammates with 15 interceptions and 27 clearances. Azpilicuetaai??i??s defensive lapses, however were also brought to the fore, as he conceded 5 penalties and scored in his own net a further 2 times last season. Lack of aerial prowess was another short-coming in the Spaniardai??i??s game, as he tended to lose a majority of his aerial duels. Azpilicueta spent the post- season on international duty with Spain at the Confederations Cup, and was a 2nd half substitute in the 3-0 humbling at the hands of the hosts Brazil in the finals.
The current 2013/14 season has seen him play under his 3rd manager at the club, Jose Mourinho. Much like last season, he spent the initial weeks deputizing for Branislav Ivanovic. However, an injury to regular left back Ashley Cole in late October, prompted Jose Mourinho to play the right footed Spaniard at left back, a move which has paid dividend. Using a right footed full back on the opposite wing was earlier proven successful by on loan Kyle Noughton at Norwich. Such has been Azpilicueta’s level of performance that he has superseded Cole and has made the left back position his own, churning up 21 appearances this season.
Defensively, he has certainly improved and tightened up his game. Earning a reputation as a tackling defender, Azpilicueta leads his defensive compatriots in tackles (3.6) and interceptions (1.2) made on average, as well as total of 67 clearances in the league. On the attacking front, too, he has improved his game. A well taken first club goal at the Emirates in the League Cup has capped off what has been a steady and solid season for the Spaniard. However, he would be hoping to be more purposeful with his crosses, providing only a solitary assist and having a low cross success rate of 54%
Azpilicueta has also been impressive in transitioning from defence to attack and linking up with the attacking players on his wing. He has built a strong relationship on the left hand side with Belgian Eden Hazard, who has been Chelseaai??i??s best player so far this season. More often than not, the duo has been the most prolific for the Blues, including in their recent dismantling of the champions Manchester United, when they exchanged a game high 14 passes. His versatility and adaptability have also been in evidence, especially in games against Liverpool, where he had to play the two halves of the game on opposite flanks.
A popular member of the playing squad, Dave ( called so in reference to the British comedy ai???Only Fools and Horsesai??? as his teammates couldnai??i??t pronounce his name) has often earned plaudits from a lot of his team members. Hardly ever without a smile, Azpilicueta is known to be one of the hardest trainers in the squad. Gary Cahill calls him ai???the ratai??? due to his high levels of energy and dedication. He has impressed Jose Mourinho and has often publicly received The Special Oneai??i??s backing.
The Chelsea squad has constantly been touted as a ai???projectai??i?? for the future by Jose Mourinho and 24 year old Azpilicueta represents what is essentially the only young blood in defence, with David Luiz next at 26. Back-up left back Ryan Bertrand has been loaned to Aston Villa, and Mourinho seems to have Azpilicueta very much in his plans for what proves to be an exciting second half to the Premier League season.
Chelseaai??i??s post-Champions League era has been highlighted by the capture of high profile attacking young players like Hazard, Oscar, Schurrle and Willian, but Cesar Azpilicueta has been a shrewd, inexpensive and astute defensive purchase.
