Brendan Rodgers believes star striker Luis Suarez has matured on and off the field since the inauspicious biting incident he was involved in the last time Liverpool played Chelsea at Anfield in the Premier League.
About one year back Suarez was banned for 10 games after biting Branislav Ivanovic in a bizarre manner when Chelsea took on Liverpool in the league last season.
Although the two have met since the incident, earlier this campaign, Ivanovic limped off the field early on in the game. This is also the first time the two would meet at the ‘crime scene’ since.
Luis Suarez is in contention for the PFA Player of the Year title with 30 goals in as many games, so far (this with missing the first five games with suspension). Liverpool sit on top of the league and have a five point gap over the visitors, and this is majorly because of the 27 year’s efforts. His involvement in the possible league winning campaign organized by Brendan Rodgers is unquestionable and the Uruguayan has been indispensable to the squad.
However, his discipline has often been brought into question which has made critics question if he should be awarded the prestigious award. Brendan Rodgers commented on his striker’s improved and matured attitude.
“He is a brilliant talent. I think the supporters have seen him mature over the course of the last season,” said Rodgers.
“I think he was in a real low moment after that game (against Chelsea last year) but he has gone away and probably looked in the mirror and reflected on himself because he is not that type of guy and it probably just spilled over.
“He is a really intelligent man who fits the values of this club, which is all about humility, class and he has all of that.
“He is a sheer winner and that probably overspilled last year, but his development over the last year has been remarkable both on and off the field and Liverpool have benefited from that.
“For me he is the consistently outstanding player over the course of the last year.”
Ex-Liverpool player and now football pundit Jamie Redknapp also said that Luis Suarez is deserving of the PFA Player Of The Year Award, more than anyone and hailed the ex-Ajax player’s attitude.
“If anyone doesn’t vote for him [for the PFA award], I’d have to question who they’ve been watching because it’s been a brilliant individual performance from him this season.”, he said
“I couldn’t say he’d never do anything rash again because he plays more on the edge than anyone I’ve ever seen but this year his performances and conduct have been exemplary.
Ai??Club captain Steven Gerrard is also in the running for the award and while sentiments may want people to see the club legend pick up the award, Luis Suarez’s performances have been too astounding to be go unrewarded.
