As the World Cup 2014 is heading towards its grand finale, one cannot help but think that the final will be contested by two South American giants, Brazil and Argentina.
In an intense night of football, where you could literally ai???cut the tension with a knifeai??i??,Ai?? Brazil just about edged Colombia 2-1 in the second quarter final of the FIFA World Cup to set up a mouth-watering clash with European giants Germany. After scraping through against a spirited Chilean side, in a game where many Brazilian fans would openly admit that they got lucky, Brazil came up against Colombia, led by their inspirational playmaker James Rodriguez. This game was touted by many as the battle of the number 10`s, Neymar vs Rodriguez.
The Defenders save Brazil
The current Brazil side, to be brutally honest, is never going to be ai???up thereai??i?? in terms of attacking flair when compared to other teams of the past, most notably the Class of `70 led by the inspirational Pele and Paolo Caesar among others and the class of ai??i??82 which had the likes of Zico and Socrates, and most recently in 2002, which had the triumvirate of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo wreaking havoc to opposition teams. But most importantly, results and goals are all that matter to Brazil at the moment and they would not mind winning the World Cup with an average front line rather than having dazzling strikers and not winning the World Cup at all.
The initial part of this quarter final saw Brazil dominate possession with the Colombians intent to attack their South American hosts and neighbors on the counter. Ai??The first half was electrifying to say the least and captain Thiago Silva, unmarked at the back post drew first blood when he bundled in Neymar`s cross. Egged on by the crowd, Brazil was intent on slaying the Colombian defence and Hulk came even further to doubling the lead, but he was thwarted by the impressive Ospina.
The Colombians were again impressive going forward and Juan Cuadrado fluffed Colombia`s best chance when he found theAi??side netting instead of the back of the net. Another chance on the counter attack, where Colombia managed to out number Brazil three to one, went begging with Thiago Silva helping out Brazil, defensively this time.
David Luiz is a world class talent but his game tends to be inconsistent at times. Friday night in Fortaleza was one of those special nights where you just had to stand up and applaud his skill. The former Chelsea defender, with his weird, but very crafty side foot technique fired in a sublime free kick from 30 yards to put Brazil 2-0 ahead and truly in control of the game just after Mario Yepes` goal had been disallowed for offside. The only aspect ai???beautifulai??i?? in the second half was David Luiz`s goal and it turned out to be a scrappy affair later with persistent fouling and disjointed play. James Rodriguez converted a penalty in the 82nd minute but it turned out to be a mere consolation in the end.
James Rodriguez: A superstar in the making
James Rodriguez once again proved he is the player to watch out for in the coming years with yet another good performance against Brazil. The influential number 10 was patrolled throughout by Fernandinho in an ugly role and the young Colombian was fouled time and again by the Manchester City man. But Rodriguez, despite being marked by Fernandinho and Paulinho managed to create a few chances and earned himself a penalty when he was clumsily brought down by Julio Caesar. One could not help but feel sorry for a teary eyed James Rodriguez at the final whistle, but the future is bright for the young Colombian and his nation, and this is just the sign of better things to come.
Neymar out of the World Cup; Thiago Silva out of the semis
One of the sadder episodes in this World Cup has to be an inconsolable Neymar being stretchered away after being caught on the back by Zuniga`s knee. The Brazilian fans` fears were worsened when scans revealed Neymar had broken vertebrae and would be ruled out for the remaining two games in the World Cup.
Thiago Silva ruled himself out of the semi- finals with a needless foul on the goalkeeper David Ospina and in the process left Scolari with another headache for the last four clash against Germany.
Germany hold the aces
Brazil have been lucky in this tournament and they would need more of it when they face Joachim Loew’s Germany in a repeat ofAi??the 2002 World Cup final in Yokohama. Germany just like Brazil are finding a tad tough to get out of second gear after routing Portugal. But Loew’s side should be confident of beating the hosts who are now without their talisman Neymar and captain Thiago Silva.
Dante should be the likely for like replacement for Thiago Silva and Shakhtar’s Bernard should make it to the starting eleven for the semis against Germany. The game promises to be a belter and the events on July 9 will let us know if the host nation makes it to the final of the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
