Chelsea Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois spent last three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid. Their relationship damaged after the Champions League tie and the Belgium custodian’s future remains unsure. Chelsea wants him back at the Stamford bridge while the youngster is looking for regular playing time.
There was some serious discussions going on when the UEFA Champions League semi final draw was made this season. English Premier League side Chelsea was pitted against La Liga side Atletico Madrid and the subject of discussion was Belgian custodian Thibaut Courtois. The youngster was owned by Chelsea, but was plying his trade for Atletico Madrid on the basis of a loan agreement. Both clubs were in good terms and there was a condition in their agreement according to which Atletico Madrid had to pay a fee to Chelsea in-order to field Thibaut Courtois against his parent club. In the end UEFA interfered and declared that clause as invalid, which resulted in damaging the relationships between the two clubs.
To add insult to injury, Thibaut Courtois made some stunning saves which played a hand in Chelsea’s exit at the hand of Atletico Madrid. Belgium goal keepers performance impressed everyone, but since then the talk between the clubs had ceased to exist. Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin said that the recent fiasco complicated things.
“It was all agreed, but the draw bringing us[Atletico Madrid] together with Chelsea in the Champions League and the [debate over] payment of the clause put the operation on hold.”
The youngster is now expected to be back in Chelsea colours next season. After lifting the La Liga title, Thibaut Courtois has made himself clear that he do not want to play second fiddle at Chelsea.
“I am not sure yet what happens next season.Ai??It is a great feeling to be champions of Spain. We[Atletico Madrid] have the Champions League final next week and then the World Cup[with Belgium]. Now is not the time to think about my future.”
“If I move somewhere, I will play. At my age, the most important thing for me, and what I want to do, is to play.”
“Petr [Cech] is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he won the Golden Glove in the Premier League this season. I have a lot of respect for him. I have two years [left on my] contract with Chelsea, so we will see what they decide.”
The situation is getting really interesting at Chelsea. Chelsea won’t be open to the idea of another loan stint outside England, at the same time Thibaut Courtois wasn’t receptive to a Premier League loan move last summer. They have two good goalkeepers and making one of them back up will not be possible, unless Petr Cech agrees to play second fiddle. Is that the need of the hour for Jose Mourinho and Chelsea?
