FC Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano has signed a four-year extension on this current contract with the Catalan club.
Massive changes were expected at Barcelona in this summer after enduring a disappointing season under former manager Gerardo Martino. A lot of players are expected to depart from Camp Nou in this transfer window, but Javier Mascherano wonai??i??t feature on that list. The former Liverpool midfielderai??i??s future in Spain came under a lot of speculations and has recently been linked with a move back to the Premier League. Italian club Napoli were also said to lining up a bid for the Argentine international with their manager Rafa Benitez desiring a reunion with Mascherano. But Barcelona has cooled down all these reports by offering him a new four-year contract and along with 100 million euros.

Mascherano, who is currently preparing with his national team ahead of the World Cup in Brazil, joined the Spanish club in a much talked about transfer move from Liverpool in 2010. The Argentine international became part of an extremely successful Barcelona side and has already won two La Liga titles and one Champions League during his stint. But he did have to compromise a lot in order to feature in the side regularly and was primarily used as a center-back alongside Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol.
Now with Puyol hanging up his boots, Mascherano will have added responsibility at the back and is expected to compete with newer arrivals in the summer. He hasnai??i??t always seemed comfortable adjusting to his role as a center-back, but he has done the job his side needed him to do, without complaining. The 29-year-old will return to his favoured position in the center of the midfield for the Argentina national side in the World Cup and with good performances in this role he might yet be able to convince Barcelonaai??i??s new manager Luis Enrique into shifting him back to the midfield.
