Andres Iniesta has been the most consistent performer of FC Barcelona in past one year and he has claimed that the Catalans have ai???failedai??? as a group and the squad needs some major changes in order to compete for the biggest honors again.
Andres Iniesta spoke to Spanish newspaper ai???Oleai??i?? yesterday. In the interview, San Iniesta, as he is famously known, expressed his views about the current situation at Camp Nou and his thoughts about coach Tata Martino.
Iniesta said: “We failed as a group, as a team, at specific moments. Sometimes things don’t go the way you want, not because you don’t want them to, but because they don’t work out, because it’s not right, because of other circumstances; but that’s the way it goes. Changes are always needed, regardless of whether you win titles or not.”
According to ongoing reports, Barca Coach Tata Martino is on verge of sacking with Luis Enrique touted to be the next boss. However, Iniesta refused to have any view on the situation and stressed that Tata is the best coach Barcelona can have. “For me, my current coach is the best, so I would be delighted for him to carry on and have the chance to contribute everything he has to offer. What’s more, the first year is always difficult for everyone.”
With many unconvincing performances, Spanish media has regularly criticized the appointment of Tata Martino this season but Iniesta feels that such criticism is unjustified and Tata is always motivated and tries to get best out of his players. “I’ve always found him to be motivated and determined in his belief in our potential. Things don’t always work out the way you want, but you have to try. Being at BarAi??a is always difficult – not just for him, but for us players as well. You are constantly demanded the maximum and you have to be prepared for that.”
Atletico Madrid are enjoying a very successful season under their coach Diego Simeone and Iniesta is also a big fan of the Argentine coach. He said: “As for me, I have great admiration and respect for him. Congratulations to them. I don’t know in what sense they are the people’s team. What’s true is that there is a bond between the coach, the players and the fans which is very important for achieving things or getting close to doing so.”
Barcelona have enjoyed a poor season as compared to their usual high standards and may finish a season without any trophy for the first time since 2007. Their only hope of silverware now is La Liga where they sit on second position with 85 points, 3 behind leaders Atletico.
