Athletic Bilbao have expressed their disappointment over Ander Herreraai??i??s transfer to Manchester United and revealed how the player acted against what he said.
The Manchester United-Ander Herrera soap opera has been in progress since last summer when former Red Devils manager David Moyes made an attempt to sign the Spaniard. The transfer saga ended in embarrassment as three imposters tried to conduct a deal on behalf of the English club and negotiations broke down.
But Manchester United finally got their man as the 24-year-old Spaniard bought himself out of his contract with Athletic Bilbao and signed a four-year contract with the English club.
The deal was worth A?29million for the English club, but Bilbao earned only a percentage of that fee due to third party ownership and sell-on clause in his contract inserted by Real Zaragoza during his move to Bilbao.
Athletic Bilbao president Josu Urrutia has now expressed his disappointment over the transfer and insisted that the Basque based club expected Herrera to extend his stay after he verbally ensured his commitment.
“For us, Ander Herrera was a player we expected to stay at the club.
“According to what he said, Ander was delighted to be here and his only aspiration was to stay here.” ai??i?? Urrutia said in an interview.
Herrera becomes the first signing under new manager Louis van Gaal, and is expected to be the first of many this summer as the Dutch coach looks to rebuild the squad after a disappointing season last time around.
Meanwhile, Bilbao have also announced that they have reached an agreement with Iker Muniain and the youngster has signed a two-year contract extension which will see his buy-out clause rise to A?35.9m.
“We’ve reached an agreement with Iker, which is good news. We have had three exceptional cases recently. If it became a trend, it would be dangerous.
“Our players’ maximum aspiration has to be to stay at Athletic. We are looking forward to an exciting year, which starts on Monday.” ai??i?? Urrutia added.
