It is unconventional, uncommon and rare for a team, to win the much coveted I- League trophy, in its first season at the top level. The Story of Bengaluru FC has been different and unique.
Bengaluru FC was conceived after JSW Group won the franchisee rights to kick start an I-league club from Bengaluru. The club soon expanded its horizons and went straight into the business end of football, signing Thoi Singh as their premier venture. Headlines would soon be bombarded as the Bengaluru based Club signed, former Manchester United Youth Player and Blackburn Rover’s Assistant Manager Ashley Westwood. The club then added a handful of premier league experience signing John Johnson and Curtis Osano, both operating as defenders. The club then latched onto strengthening their attack by signing Indian Talisman and Captain Sunil Chettri, who was released from Sporting Portugal B. All in all, the Bengaluru based side accommodated Talent, along with experience and class.
Ashley Westwood’s era began with a 1-1 draw at home to Mohun Bagan. The first five matches played at home were all marked by signs of brilliance and acumen, with the side losing neither of the five matches. Tasting a 2-0 defeat at the hand of East Bengal in its first trip away from home, the Bengaluru team soon ran riots against I-league’s other participants. The team went on to win 14 matches out of 24, drawing 5 and loosing 5 in the process, hammering the likes of Shillong Lajong, Churchill Brothers and Dempo in its stride. Finishing as Champions of India with 47 points, four points above rivals East Bengal, the side subsequently qualified for the 2015 edition of the AFC CUP.
The Story of Bengaluru FC has been quite unique and extraordinary. The Club though tasting success in the I league, failed to impress in the Federations Club, finishing a disappointing third in their group. With numerous competitions coming their way, The Hard Tackle’s Joseph Solomon decided to chat with Bengaluru FC’s Cheif Technical Officer, Mandar Tamhane.
Joseph : First off, Congratulations on winning the I league.
Mandar : Thanks !
Joseph : What do you think are the reasons thatAi??differentiatesAi??BFC from rest of the I-League clubs ?
Mandar : Personally I,do not think there is a difference between BFC and the rest of I- League Clubs, its for the people to judge. At BFC we are one close happy family who are extremely passionate about their work and the sport with each one wanting to excel in his or her role.
Joseph : What were the three main components or say reasons of your I-League win in the debut season itself?
Mandar : For me Zeroing on Ashley Westwood and appointing him as the Head Coach of Bengaluru FC was one of the major Reasons for our success. His massive experience as a player and coach at the top level brought in the much needed expertise on and off the field. The selection of our off the field team was also one of the factors for our success. For any Club the fans play a vital role in the success of the club, and for a start – up club like ours it was very important that we connect with the fans and our off the field team played a crucial role in trying to achieve this. To have the right personnel in right positions off the field is often a neglected factor in Indian football and i believe this is one of our strengths.
Also the commitment of our Owners and Director Mr. Sajjan Jindal, Mr. Parth Jindal and Mr. Kunal Agarwal was equally important. All of them being big followers of football and their understanding of the sport helped us a lot as equal importance was given on Nutrition of the Players, Scientific and Modern Training Equipment was invested in, importance was given on the players travel and stay, injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of players was given its due importance. It is very important to get the Managements support and backing in these areas.
Joseph : With BFC set to play in Asia this year, what special plans has the club made to perform well at the continental level ?
Mandar : We are already six weeks into the Pre Season and we have the entire squad (excluding the players selected for the Asian Games probables) including the foreigners training with us from day one. It was important for us to have everybody together and we start the pre – season on time in spite the League and other competition starting late than normal. All the players and the Coaching Staff have been putting in the Hard Yards since. We played a couple of friendly games in Goa against Salgaocar and Pune FC which has definitely helped.
We intent to go on an Overseas Exposure Trip and we are in the process of finalizing our destination for the same. This will give a much needed exposure to quality and strong opposition in foreign surroundings which will be helpful for the teams preparation for tougher tests in the future.
Joseph : So are transfers a part of the plan? Given that you have signed Udanta Singh and Eugeneson Lyngdoh, what was the the clubs transfer policy this time around ?
Mandar : We have retained more that 90 percent of our squad from last year and that is something we all are very proud of. Last season during the mid – season break we arranged couple of games against Tata Football Academy with the intention of having a look at Udanta and Ashley was satisfied in him and we locked him then. He later on was instrumental in winning the U-19 I League for TFA and being the highest Goal scorer in the League.Ai??Also Ashley and Pradhyum zeroed down on the reinforcements required at certain positions and Eugenson and Lalchhuanmawia fit the bill based on their performance against Bengaluru FC last season with Rangdajeid and Shillong Lajong respectively.
A notable addition has been that of Ex England U -20 Captain Joshua Walker as our Marquee Player replacing Johnny Menyongar. Johnny’s contribution last year was immense and to leave him out was an extremely tough decision for Ashley to make. But Joshua brings in a lot more naturally, at the position that he plays in and also he is much younger than Johnny.
Joseph : Will the club participate in Durand Cup this year?And With the Fed Cup to start only in December, what are the plans to keep the players fit this time around ?
Mandar : Yes the Club is looking at the possibility of playing in the Durand Cup. I don’t think its a challenge to keep the players fit with the system that the Coaching Staff has put in and also the players are far too motivated, but yes the challenge would be to get regular competition till the season starts. We will not have the liberty to play in the local League like the Clubs form Goa and Kolkata but our Exposure Trip and friendlies with various clubs is something we can look forward to.
