Arsenal are looking to add a defender in the upcoming transfer and have identified Chris Smalling, Ron Vlaar And Virgil Van Dijk as potential targets.
In the upcoming transfer window, Arsenal will want to strengthen their squad defensively as the club has fallen short in the position after the sale of Thomas Vermaelen, departure of Bacary Sagna and injury problems of Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny.
Arsene Wenger had earlier admitted that the club will try to bolster the defence in the January transfer window.
The manager had said ai??i?? ai???I agree we could have bought one more player, (but) we did not find. We will try to rectify that, because we are a bit short with the injuries we have (defensively), and overall I think we will rectify that in the transfer market in January.ai???
Recent reports have indicated have indicated that the Gunners have shortlisted Chris Smalling from Manchester United, Ron Vlaar from Aston Villa and Virgil Van Dijk from Celtic as possible additions.
Chris Smalling
Manchester United centre back Chris Smalling has been in the news for his dismal performance against Manchester City last weekend. Smalling was sent off in the second half after receiving his second yellow card of the game and was criticised by manager Louis Van Gaal for the ai???stupidai??i?? tackle. The Gunners had reportedly discussed the possibility of bringing Smalling to the Emirates and they are now planning to re-ignite their interest in the Englishman.
Ron Vlaar
Dutch defender Ron Vlaar had a solid World Cup in which he was selected in all the games by manager Louis Van Gaal. The defender attracted interest from Arsenal as well as Manchester United and Southampton in the summer and has also been freshly linked with Manchester United. The Dutchman would be a solid addition to Wengerai??i??s side and a suitable bid is sure to tempt Aston Villa to cash in on the defender.
Virgil Van Dijk
Celtic defender Virgil Van Djik was another player Arsenal was interested in signing in the summer. However, Wenger failed to sign the Dutchman back then. Apparently the Gunners have renewed interest in Van Djik and might want to sign him in January. It will not be a tough task for Wenger to convince the defender as Van Djik had previously praised the London based club. He said recently: “Arsenal is an amazing club, of course.It’s a big club with a great history as well.”
