Arsenal legend Robert Pires has claimed that Arsenal can win the EPL this season if Arsene Wenger succeeds in signing Sami Khedira from Real Madrid in January transfer window.
Robert Pires was part of Arsenal team which won two Premier League titles and three FA cups. His countryman Patrick Vieira was also a part of that Arsenal team and Pires believes that a player with qualities of his former team-mate is required for Gunners if they want to have any realistic chance of winning the Premier League title this year.
“He [Wenger] needs a big player in the middle, like Viera, strong, tall, because this position is very important for the balance between attack and defence.ai??? Pires said. He was speaking to The Daily Telegraph.
“The quality is there but you need more, maybe [someone] like Yaya Toure in middle. He reminds me of Patrick Vieira, maybe they have an opportunity with Khedira. It is likely in the January window. He played very well with Germany. My advice is if he can buy Khedira he can be the [new] Vieira, more aggression in the middle. He has a lot of experience. When you play in the middle you need experience, especially when your midfield is young like Arsenal’s.”
Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira has been linked clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, AC Milan and Chelsea since past few months and Pires believes that the German has all the attributes to become a worthy successor of Vieira.
Robert Pires spent four weeks with the first team of Arsenal in August and he believes that the current midfielders are ai???very goodai??? but more aggressive player is required to lead them from front. And Khedira is the perfect candidate. “They have nine points difference with Chelsea but we can still win the league. It’s very difficult but in football everything is possible,” Pires said.
The contract of Sami Khedira is set to expire in June 2015 but Real Madrid has not opened any talks with the agent of the player yet. It is widely believed that the management of Real Madrid is reluctant to offer the extension to Khedira and he could be available for meager fee of around 10 million euros. Apart from Arsenal, the likes of Manchester United, AC Milan and Chelsea are also keeping the tabs on the situation of Khedira.
