AIFFAi??Navi Mumbai Academy Team or ANMA as they are popularly called stormed into the final round of the U-19 I-League from the Maharashtra Zone upsetting two time defending champions and overwhelming favorites Pune FC in the process.
Major Footballing nations across the world pay huge emphasis on youth development and a lot of top players come through the various age-group academies. “Catch them young” is the quot that is famously used. India had always been alien to the concept and it is no surprise that India finds itself ranked 150th in the world.
AIFF realized the importance of having age-group academies and onAi??May 1, 2012, AIFF launched its first regional academy in Navi Mumbai consisting on U-16 boys (born in 1998).Ai??The Academy, based at Fr. Agnel Technical Education Complex, Vashi, Navi Mumbai was opened up as a bi-partite effort and a collaboration between AIFF and Fr. Agnel Charities, Navi Mumbai, where the infrastructure for accommodation and training have been provided by Fr. Agnel Charities and the technical expertise, training equipment, coaches alongside the players are through AIFF. Two years down the efforts of opening the academy have yielded results at the academy boys won 7 of their 8 matches in the Maharashtra Zone of U-19 I-League to make it to the final round. The academy willAi??harbor the players till the age group of U-18 after which they will graduate to the Elite Academy.
The team began its campaign with a thumping 4-0 win over Mumbai FC where winger Suman Sarkar scored a brace with all the goals came in the first half. The academy boys were expected to win the match but the margin of the win was a pleasant surprise. The academy boys then went on to defeat PIFA and Kenkre in their next two matches. ANMA skipperAi??Bidyananda Singh emerged as the key player in the midfield leading the team by example. The team then took on the Pune FC U-19 team in the most anticipated match of the zone. The Pune FC U-19 consisted of the players from the Pune FC academy who like the ANMA boys had been together for the last two years and had the experience of playing in several tournaments across the country. Pune FC went ahead in the 38th minute but the academy boys leveled the scores through skipperAi??Bidyananda Singh who scored with a delightful chip from 35 yards out. Goals from Rakesh Oram Ai??and Robinson SinghAi??sealed a memorable 3-0 win for the academy boys and cemented their place at the top of the table.
The second leg of matches saw the academy boys win 2-0 against Mumbai FC to notch up their fifth consecutive win. Moinuddin Khan and Milan BasumataryAi??scored the goals for the academy boys. The boys confirmed their place in the next round defeating PIFA Colaba 4-0 withAi??winger Suman Sarkar scoring a brace.Ai??Basumatary notched up a brace and an assist as the team recorded its seventh win with a 5-2 win over Kenkre. The team ended its campaign with a 2-1 loss to Pune FC. Overall the team scored a staggering 26 goals in 8 matches and conceded only 7 goals and ended with 21 points. Coach Sajid Dhar was elated with the performance and said

Skipper Bidyananda Singh andAi??Milan Basumatary played their heart out and their performances deserve a special mention. The duo scored crucial goals and also notched up several assists. While Ai??Bidyananda is employed as a defensive midfielder, Ai??Basumatary spearheads the attack and plays in the classic number nine position. Basumatary Ai??ended up with six goals in the league.Ai??Winger Suman Sarkar emerged as one of the key players for the team scoring seven goals in the competition including a brace in the first match against Mumabi FC.Ai??Rakesh Oram, who scored the fastest goal of the U-19 I-League when he scored in the second minute against PIFA , impressed on the right flank with his pace and skills. A bigger test awaits the ANMA boys when they face the zonal winners of Goa, North-East, Kolkata and Rest of India in the final round. SESA Academy, TFA and Shillong Lajong , who are strong contenders to top the Goa, Rest of India and North-East Zones respectively have well established youth teams and have done well in the past in age group events and the opportunity for ANMA boys to rub shoulders with them will undoubtedly help them become better players.
