AC Milan – The Team After Seedorf

AC Milan endured one of their worst seasons last time. The lack of silverware is common, but total disintegration of the team and most importantly, its management, is what saddened the fans more than anything. The will to fight and succeed was replaced by finger pointing and veiled attacks via the media.

Milanai??i??s season ended disastrously and the first one out of the door was none other than Clarence Seedorf. Seen as the prodigal son to lead Milan to its lost European glory, Seedorf was sacked hardly six months into the job. That he would be sacked was anyoneai??i??s guess when the season ended, but the nature of his exit left a sour taste in the mouth. Bereft of a proper farewell, Seedorf was sacked via an email! It only went to show the level to which his stock has dropped in the last few months and the level of mutual unhappiness to continue in the disharmonious relationship. Another long-time favorite, Pippo Inzaghi was brought in as coach and although he will face the exact same scrutiny as Seedorf, the fact that he has achieved some success at the Primavera level will hold him in good stead.

Milan needs a squad overhaul if they are to remain competitive both domestically and on the European front. On the goalkeeping front, Milan have let go of Amelia and acquired Micheal Agazzi. Agazzi had been the ai???keeper at Cagliari and was set for a contract extension earlier, but his refusal to do so led to him being frozen from the squad. Subsequently, he was sent to Cheivo and Milan acquired him on a free transfer. As far as the position under the bar is concerned, Milan appears to have three known faces ai??i?? Abbiati, Gabriel and now Agazzi. Gabriel, the youngest of the lot, will surely see some action in the upcoming season having already played a handful of matches last season. There is still a long way to go before he can be considered as Milanai??i??s no. 1, and with Abbiati likely to hang up his boots after this season, Gabriel will take up the no. 2 slot.

A lot of the pre-season effort has gone into resolving the co-ownership deals and Milan have closed out a lot of them. Currently, there are only two players who are on a co-ownership deal – Gianmario Comi and Simone Verdi, both of them moving to Torino for the season. Milanai??i??s defense has been weak to say the least and it is a good thing that they have let go of Silvestre, Salamon and Zaccardo. While the former has returned to Internazionale as his loan expired, Salamon was sent to Sampdoria as part of the capture of Andrea Poli. Zaccardo was rightfully sent to BalAi??kesirspor for an undisclosed fee. While Milan were busy signing youngsters, Zaccardoai??i??s arrival was an aberration. The only deal that Milan now needs to close is the capture of Rami. He has been more than impressive in his six month spell at Milanello and it will bode well for Milan to have him at the back. Thiago Silva seems to be making all sorts of noises about returning to Milan and how important Milan was for him but it can be very, very safely assumed that PSG will not sell their captain.

However, PSG did supply two players ai??i?? defender Alex and winger Jeremy Menez. The most interesting aspect about their arrival was that Milan once again paid absolutely nothing. Both of them have been on the fringes at PSG and once their contracts ran out, Milan pounced on them. It once again displayed Milanai??i??s ability to attract rejects from other clubs.

It will be years before Milan fans can even start to understand the transfer of Bakaye TraorAi?? in the first place. Brought in to solve part of Milanai??i??s midfield problems, TraorAi?? rarely saw action in his first season. Till date, he has not appeared from the very start of any match and that goes to show the level of ai???researchai??? Milan did before capturing him. He spent most of last season on loan and this time he was offloaded to Bursaspor. From the midfield perspective, Milan resolved the co-ownership of Poli and Saponara. However, all eyes will surely be on Hachim Mastour ai??i?? the teenage prodigy. Promoted to the first team at the dying stages of the previous season, Mastour will surely play some matches in the current season. It is a well-known fact that he is enormously talented but how he fares with the first team will be a different ball game altogether. He not only needs to be protected and nurtured, he needs a good leader and a voice to guide him in his journey to greatness.

It is a good thing that there were rumors about Balotelli being sold. He is and always will be a tremendously talented player, but at the end of the day, he lacks the mentality to succeed and play at the highest level. When someone of the level of Jose Mourinho leaves you out of the squad, it has to be said that there is something seriously wrong with the player. And the World Cup only proved that no matter how much effort is spent; Balotelli will always be a wasted talent. He is someone who has the talent to be the best in the world, but no matter how much anyone tries, after a certain duration of time, he is bound to revert to his antics. Milan needs to get a good deal from this sale and shore up their forward line. Who knows, before the summer ends, Milan can still land up with two ai???freeai??? players ai??i?? Samuel Etoai??i??o and Ashley Cole; players deemed not good enough to continue in their respective clubs.
