Bryan Cristante has been one of the few bright sparks for Milan this season. What does the youngster need to make the cut and become one of world football’s stars?
AC Milanai??i??s season thus far has been nothing short of disastrous. Thirty points behind league leaders Juventus and 11th in the table, just six points safe of the relegation zone, they have struggled to show even glimpses of the brilliance that the football world has come to associate with the club. To add to all the commotion comes the sacking of Max Allegri following their shocking 3-4 defeat at the hands of lowly Sassuolo.
Injuries have been the name of the game once again, as almost the entire side has faced some sort of lay off at some point or the other this season. Inspiration has been lacking for the Rossoneri, with even reliable figures such as Riccardo Montolivo performing well below par. Even the return of Kaka, and possibly his form of yesteryear, havenai??i??t been enough to instill some energy and life into this side.
Yet, in the midst of all this distress, there has been a silver lining over the past couple of weeks. The promotion of Bryan Cristante, a couple of weeks ago, paid off for Max Allegri as the 18-year-old midfielder has taken to the top division like a fish to water. Judging a player on just two performances sounds absolutely ridiculous but the quality that this youngster has showcased has been remarkable.
Standing at over six feet tall, Cristante looks more than intimidating for an 18-year-old. In less than 180 minutes on the field, he has displayed his venomous shooting ability, an urge to get stuck in, and the tirelessness that has often been lacking in Milanai??i??s midfield this season.
But weai??i??ve seen at least four other players thrown into the deep end by Allegri since last season, only to watch the pressures of top level club football eat away at them and watch them slip away into oblivion or witness a considerable drop in their performances. Stephan El Shaarawy performed the Herculean task of carrying this illustrious club on his shoulders for the entire first half of last season, only to watch his level of play slide slowly, and has now has to sit out most of the season due to injury.
Another player who was surrounded by a great deal of hype, and justifiably, was Mattia De Sciglio. Ever since the retirement of Paolo Maldini, Milan have struggled to find a regular left back. In the then 20-year-old De Sciglio, the club seemed to have found the perfect replacement for their club legend. But as was the case with El Shaarawy, injuries have begun to plague the youngsterai??i??s career, making consistency a worrisome factor for Milan and De Sciglio.
And these are the better cases for Milan in the last year or so. When 18-year-old Mai??i??Baye Niang was thrust into the limelight of Milanai??i??s starting lineup, it seemed that Allegri had found a gem among gems. Unfortunately, the burden associated with playing for such a big club proved too much to handle for the Frenchman, and his regularity in featuring in the starting eleven began to wane. So rapid was Niangai??i??s fall that it took him just a year to go from Milanai??i??s most promising player to being loaned out to Montpellier, with no considerable hope being placed on him for the future.
Another one of Allegriai??i??s rough diamonds who suddenly seems to have disappeared from the spotlight is Milanai??i??s latest goalkeeping acquisition, Gabriel. The former Cruzeiro shot stopper, like Niang, had his fair share of promising moments for Milan but with consistency being a problem, he hasnai??i??t managed to keep the goalkeeping position for himself.
With all these players only around 21 years of age, it seems naA?ve to imagine their careers already fading away. Promise is aplenty. Couple this with faith from the coaches to come, and these lads should go on to become household names in Italy. But these injuries and drops from the starting lineup could have the wrong mental effects on players so young and tender.
This is why Cristanteai??i??s exposure to top flight football needs to be a lot more controlled. In a season where the club has performed miserably, looking to an 18-year-old for inspiration week in and week out is only going to lead to the burning out of Cristante. This doesnai??i??t call for him to be used only as a late substitute in inconsequential matches, but a more sustainable approach so as to ensure that he isnai??i??t overworked both physically and mentally.
With Milanai??i??s midfield often looking insipid, Cristanteai??i??s youthfulness has added that much needed life. The duo of Andrea Poli and Riccardo Saponara need to be used in tandem with Cristante in order to help give the burly midfielder both the exposure and the rest that a budding professional requires. This would also allow Poli and Saponara to grow as players, something which has been limited thus far.
With Allegri gone, it will be interesting to see how Clarence Seedorf chooses to use Cristante. Overusing the youngster in this time of tumult isnai??i??t going to do anyone any good. As Allegri said before leaving, ai???Cristante is a young player who must be given time to grow without pressure.ai??? Fans and the media need to give Cristante time and space to err. Care, caution and continuity will help in taking Cristante from a promising talent to a worldwide sensation.
