Napoli manager Walter Mazzarri has confirmed his departure from Napoli, after enjoying a successful season with the Azzurri.
Napoli have enjoyed one of their best seasons in recent times. The Naples club made tremendous progress during his four year tenure at the club. But now the 51-year-old seeks newer challenges elsewhere. Mazzarri confirmed his exit after the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Roma in the last game of their season.
“My future won’t be here. I want to thank all those who have been close to me in these last four years.
“I’ve closed my cycle here.
“I thought of having a lot of respect to have avoided announcing this earlier. I tried to get Napoli as high as possible and, if I would have spoken before, there probably would have been problems.
“I thank president [Aurelio] De Laurentiis for trying to change my mind and thanks to everyone who has helped us to have a sensational season.
“At this point, I think it’s right changing, or having a rest. If I have offers, I will evaluate them. If I have the right stimulus, I’ll go, otherwise I’ll have a rest.
“There aren’t any problems with Napoli. Out of respect for Napoli, I have never wanted to talk with others until now. From tomorrow, I’ll evaluate my future.” ai??i?? Mazzari was quoted in press.
Mazzari replaced Roberto Donadoni back in 2009 at the Italian club, and it has turned out to be a brilliant move. The clubai??i??s position in the league has improved with every passing season and this time around they have finished second in the league. They have performed well in the Champions League as well, going out to eventual winners Chelsea the last time around.
The former Sampdoria manager has installed a wonder counter-attacking style of play and last season the trio of Hamsik, Cavani and Lavezzi troubled a lot of defence across Europe. Despite Lavezzi leaving for PSG this season, Napoli have maintained their progress as a team and Mazzari is leaving the club in good stead for his successor.
Rafa Benitez is rumoured to be in contention for the managerial vacancy next season and it will be interesting to see the tactical changes that the Spaniard will bring across to the club, if he lands the job. Napoliai??i??s immediate priority of course will be to retain Cavani and Hamsik, who have been linked with a lot of clubs across Europe.
