Transfers – Rooney Saga Takes Another Twist, Liverpool Snap Up Defender

Manchester United add a midfielder to their demands

The on-going transfer saga involving England and Manchester United attacker Wayne Rooney seems to have added more spice into its mix after with the club having re-opened informal talks with Chelsea. Wayne Rooney has openly stated that he is looking to move out of Manchester with fellow English clubs Chelsea and Arsenal showing interests. Chelsea have already had couple of their earlier bids rejected with their latest being in the range of A?30m. Reports have indicated that Manchester United are now interested in adding Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata to the mix of their demands for Rooney.

The Red Devilai??i??s search for a midfielder this summer has been much publicized with their failed attempts in luring the likes of Thiago, Ozil and others. Their attempts to bid for Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini also seem to have hit a dead end. Mata has been a vital cog in the Chelsea machinery over the last couple of seasons. Last season he made over 55 appearances in a blue shirt scoring 19 goals and notching up 35 assists but more importantly his key contributions was his ability to get that crucial ball into the final third. Robin Van Persieai??i??s goals for the Manchester club were key in allowing them to lay their hands on the Premier League title and a provider in Mata will go a long way in helping the Dutchman in maintaining his goal streak.

Chelsea had earlier dismissed all reports that they’d offered Mata in a player exchange deal for Rooney, so it will be interesting to see whether they will now entertain any such demands from Manchester United, especially considering the fact that two of their three strikers (Torres and Ba) have performed poorly in the first two games. It may eventually all come done to who’s the most desperate out of Rooney, United and Chelsea.

Liverpool add fullback to their squad

Valencia left back Aly Cissokho has joined Liverpool on a season long loan from Spanish side Valencia and is eligible to feature for the Mersyside club this weekend against Aston Villa. Cissokho made his name at Porto putting in some impressive performances in the Champions League notably against his current club in 2009. But since his move away from Portugal, he has struggled to live to the expectations at Lyon and at Valencia. Known for his accurate crosses into the box and aggressive runs along the left flank in support of the attack, Cissokho made 30 appearances for Valencia last season. Brendan Rodgers has been quite active this summer bringing in players to strengthen his side to help them push for a Champions league spot and the adding of full back should bring in the stability he wants at the back.

Rogers though will be aware that the quick paced fullback has chinks in his armour. Cissokho, in his career at Lyon and Porto, has often been caught out of position by opposition wingers due to his liking of bombing upfield in support of the attack. Physically strong, he is also known to make rash challenges when being caught out. Last season he picked up 6 yellows and a red for his efforts. It is hard to see if the loan signing will be an immediate starter for Liverpool. Current leftback Jose Enrique might not be adept in propagating attacks but does boast a good defensive record.

Arsenal Chase Keeper

Loss on opening day to Aston Villa seems to have finally woken up Arsenal and its manager Arsene Wenger as a number of players have been linked to the London club over the last 2-3 days. One such name is that of Valencia custodian Vicente Guaita. Guaita has a A?20m buy-out clause that may hinder Arsenalai??i??s approach as reports suggest that Wenger is not too keen on shelling out the amount. Arsenal were reported to have approached Valencia with a A?6 million offer that was rejected.

Wengerai??i??s earlier keeper targets were Stoke Cityai??i??s Asmir Begovic and Espanyolai??i??s Casilla. Eventhough Guaita made only 14 appearances for Valencia last season he made a total of 31 saves and averaged 2.07 saves per goal conceded. Wojciech SzczAi??sny was Wengerai??i??s first choice keeper last season and although he put in a good display in between the sticks, he was guilty of mistakes that proved crucial to Arsenal.
