Tottenham Hotspur reached the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup after their second hard fought win over Hull City in space of four days.
Both these sides faced each other in the league prior to this match and Tottenham were lucky to have won that game through a very controversial penalty decision. Steve Bruceai??i??s men one again put up a wonderful fight in this League Cup fixture and will once again consider themselves unlucky to have lost out to Spurs.
The home side, who failed to score from open play against Hull in the League last weekend, got off to a wonderful start as Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a wonder goal. The Icelandic attacker, who has been in good goal scoring form this season, produced a thunderous strike from outside the box and scored his fourth goal of the season for Spurs. Tottenham dominated possession for most of first half, but failed to extend their lead.
In the second half Hull City came out with more intent and in the 53rd minute they found the equalizer as Brad Friedel scored an own goal. After some neat build-up play, the Elmohamadyai??i??s attempted shot from the left was going wide, but Friedel was in its way and the ball went in off him. Both the sides failed to create too many other openings in the second half and the match went into extra-time.
In the extra-time it was Hull City who took the lead for the first time in this game as McShane headed home from a wonderful corner by Boyd. Just minute later, the away side had the opportunity to double their lead, but Gedo failed to score from a good opportunity and they had to pay for that miss as Spurs scored from the other end. Jermaine Defoe set up Harry Kane, who came on as a substitute in the second half, and the young forward kept his composure to finish past Jakupovic.
Kaneai??i??s equaliser took the game to penalties and Gylfi Sigurdsson was the first man on the spot The 24-year-old made no mistake and calmly finished past the goalkeeper. But Hull City got off to a poor start as Aaron Mclean failed to score. Erik Lamela was the next man to miss his spot kick as the former Roma manai??i??s poor start to his career at White Hart Lane continued. It went down to sudden death as it became harder to separate both the sides, eventually Tottenham won the shoot-out by 8-7 as Elmohamady missed his spot kick. The midfielder has experienced a torrid time against Spurs in the last two matches.
It was a disheartening loss of Hull City, who produced a wonderful performance and even had the opportunity to win this game. Interestingly, Andre Villas Boas, who criticized the fans in the last game for producing a negative atmosphere, praised them after this game.

Villas Boas was understandably delighted with this dramatic win over Hull City in the penalties, but insisted that his side were not prepared for this.
“We practised and practised penalties for the Basel game last year, but we didn’t this time. We haven’t practised them for three or four months!
