Tottenham Hotspur stumbled to their second defeat of the season as West Ham and Sam Allardyce produced a master class at White Hart Lane.
Both these sides came into this game on contrasting run of form. While Tottenham were near the top of the league, West Ham have been drawn down into a relegation battle. Moreover, with West Hamai??i??s poor away record, hardly anyone would have given them a chance to get a positive result in this game. But they pulled off the biggest shock of this weekend with an amazing performance at White Hart Lane.
The first half was a tight affair as neither team created too many openings. Both teams were mostly restricted to shots from long range. Townsend looked the most likely Spurs player to create something as he continued to drift in from the right flank on to his left foot.
The second half started in similar fashion, but West Ham were gradually growing in confidence of holding off Tottenham. Then in 66thAi??minute West Ham defender Winston Reid scored from a corner and gave the visitors an improbable lead. It was their first away goal of the season and from the most unlikely of sources. The goal forced Tottenham to throw more bodies forward, which left them vulnerable at the back and Ricardo Vaz Te doubled the lead in the space of just six minutes. Seven minutes later Spurs were once again left short at the back and Ravel Morrison nearly ran the length of half the pitch before finishing it. It was a wonderful individual goal from the former Manchester United youngster. The game ended 3-0 for the visitors and has dropped Tottenham down the table.
Andre Villas Boas was disappointed with the result, but gave credit to West Ham for their wonderful performance.
“West Ham deserve full credit, they played very, very well.
“The first half we played well, but not enough to score. We started the second half very strongly, but unfortunately for us their set-play goal came a little bit against the run of play.
“They totally deserved it, and every time we tried to make changes to come back into the game, they scored again. The three goals came in a quick sequence, which did not allow us to bounce back and react.
“We wanted to throw in all our weapons but as we were ready to put Soldado on, they made it 2-0. It made it even more difficult to come back into the game.
“We never had that chance, but West Ham did extremely well in the second half. They were very aggressive, getting to the ball first and they deserved the result.
“We need to bounce back against Aston Villa and make sure we stay connected to the top.” ai??i?? The Tottenham Hotspur manager said.
