A look at David Moyes in his first press conference as manager of Manchester United and what his first indications mean for the club.
At 4:04 pm GMT on 5thAi??July, David Moyes walked in for his first press conference as Manchester United manager. Smartly dressed in a grey suit, David looked around with mild anxiety at the assembled scribes and the expectant environment at the press conference, which was called out by the club. Although the event lacked the numbers compared to when Jose Mourinho was unveiled for his second stint at Stamford Bridge, Moyes looked understandably nervous for his biggest meeting with the press so far. He grew in confidence as the press conference went on and handled the journalists with great tact and composure. Carefully choosing his words, Moyes answered questions from the press ranging from his thoughts at being chosen as Sir Alex Fergusonai??i??s successor, the new management roles carved out for legends Ryan Giggs and Phil Neville, and the burning topic of Wayne Rooneyai??i??s future.
Moyes was accompanied by United captain Nemanja Vidic, whose own future at the club had been questioned in the past few weeks. These rumours have been quickly quashed though and the Serbian centre half looked assured in his verbal support for his new manager. Vidic said the team is behind David Moyes and are looking forward to training with increased intensity for the new season – “Players are going to increase their work. David has worked in the Premier League and he knows the players but the players still have something to prove to him”.
The first few warm up questions were on his appointment as Manchester United manager, where Moyes claimed that Sir Alexai??i??s vote of confidence in him was of prime importance. Moyes was humble enough to accept that there were managers out there who have a better track record and who could have been offered this role based on their credentials, but at the same time showed that he was raring to go at his new job and to justify the faith shown in him.
“I also think it’s a plus for British coaches,” said Moyes. “Hopefully people will see if I can do it, then they can do it as well.” Moyes seemed quietly confident of his new journey at Manchester United by asserting that he would want to put his stamp on his Old Trafford reign without letting go of the traditions and philosophy of the club.

Moyes Moves
1.Ai??Coaching Staff Shake Up: Itai??i??s a complete overhaul of the coaching staff at Manchester United in the post Ferguson era. Assistant coach Mike Phelan, first team coach RenAi?? Meulensteen and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele have all left the club to be replaced by Steve Round, Jimmy Lumsden and Chris Woods respectively. These are all coaches Moyes is already familiar with from his Everton and Preston North End days. Steve Round had been at Everton since 2008. Moyes has worked closely with him and with Lumsden who worked with Moyes at both Everton and Preston. Chris Woods was a member of the England national team in the late eighties and has been Evertonai??i??s goalkeeping coach since 1998, with a small stint as goalkeeping coach of the USA national team sandwiched in between the Everton role and his current responsibility as Manchester United goalkeeping coach.
In the midst of all these changes, Moyes has appointed Ryan Giggs as a player-coach for the new season, and will be joined by former United and Everton man Phil Neville. This move has undercurrents of an attempt at trying to allay the fears that things are changing too fast at Old Trafford. Given the swift change in coaching staff, Moyes has tried to appease United fans and reassure them of his intention to continue with the clubai??i??s history and traditions. Both Giggs and Neville have been training for their coaching badges, so the move does seem a logical one. However, the reason for the appointment of Giggs in particular looks to have been made with not just his footballing talent in mind but also to form a connect between the new staff and the players. Moyes has himself admitted that part of the reason for appointing the two veterans is to ai???make sure that I had connection to what had happened here before”.
This looks to be a move for damage control to stave off potential resistance from players or fans who would want to see familiar faces at the helm. However, while Giggsai??i??s appointment makes sense for the future, there might be some concern due to the fact that the important position of assistant manager has been given to a new face. In the past, assistant managers at United have been instrumental at getting Sir Alex Fergusonai??i??s directions across to the players. Brian Kidd, who was appointed as Unitedai??i??s assistant manager in 1991 and Steve McClaren, who succeeded him in 1998, oversaw a period of United dominance. McClaren left in 2001 and we saw United slip up to Arsenal in the Premier League title race that year. Carlos Queiroz was then appointed and United won the Premier League next season. Queiroz was re-appointed in 2004 and oversaw two more Premier League triumphs. Phelanai??i??s appointment in 2008 was followed by three more Premier League titles. Perhaps it would have been wiser to have a familiar figure at Old Trafford for an important role like the Assistant Manager, who could bridge the players with the management better. Giggs is that man, but his is not that role.
With the player-coach role going out of fashion, (the last successful player-coach was Gianluca Vialli at Chelsea in 2000) it will be interesting to see how Giggs carries on his on-field and off-field duties to make sure the title remains at Old Trafford. It will not be an easy job, and he may end up playing a very crucial role in David Moyesai??i??s backroom staff next season.
2.Ai??The Wayne Rooney Problem: As the press conference moved past the formalities, Moyes was asked about Wayne Rooneyai??i??s situation. Quick to acknowledge the eagerness with which this topic was being waited for, Moyes declared in no uncertain terms that Wayne Rooney was in fact a Manchester United player and he was not for sale. Moyes used this occasion to reiterate that Rooney is a terrific player and that he and the new coaching staff would do all to help him get the goals he needs to become a United legend with the likes of George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton and Denis Law. He was careful to insist that whatever happened in the past between Rooney and Sir Alex was behind them and he would now be looking forward to a new working relationship with the England striker.
United fans will be happy and relieved at hearing this, since the Wayne Rooney saga was the one task right now that had put Moyes directly under the spotlight. Of Rooney he said, “We are working together now and I can see a glint in his eye. He looks happy and he looks like he is going to knuckle down and get himself right. He’s a terrific player and I’m looking forward to working with him. But he won’t be for sale.” However, he also went on to say “I can categorically tell you that Wayne Rooney is training fantastically well,” he said. “That’s the only thing I can categorically tell you.” It does look like Moyes will try his best to keep Rooney at United, but he will have to back this up with action.
Rooney has in the past expressed his desire for a new challenge and feels that he isnai??i??t being appreciated enough at Old Trafford. Now that the reliance on Rooney is less with Robin van Persie in the fold, Moyes will have to work out a way to play Rooney and van Persie together and get the best out of them both. Rooney will not be happy to play out of position for another season. He has said before that he would want to play as an out and out striker. This doesnai??i??t leave much room for Moyes to keep Rooney happy. If Rooney continues to feel undervalued at the club for another year, United will face the prospect of letting him go on the cheap next year or for free when his contract expires in 2015.
If Moyes does decide to humour Rooney, he would have to find a way to quickly make the team gel with both Rooney and van Persie in first team goal-scoring roles. This might call for a change in formation to a 4-4-2 and would prevent plans to accommodate a potential Ronaldo or Bale move, since these players would prefer to play as wingers to a single striker. If Rooney is not a major part of David Moyesai??i??s plans, it would make sense to sell him off in this transfer window. United will not be getting a higher transfer fee for Rooney once this window is shut. By insisting that United want to keep Rooney, Moyes could also be trying to get a better value for the player in this transfer window with the likes of Chelsea, Barcelona, PSG and Arsenal keeping tabs on the situation.
Whatever decision Moyes comes up with, Rooney has certainly given him a headache. He wished to leave in 2010 because he felt there was a lack of quality in the United squad. After a U-turn, he now wants to leave because he is being kept out of the United first team by more effective players. Rooneyai??i??s situation will have to be sorted quickly with action and not just words. Moyes may have to pick at this problem for the next few months to come.
3.Ai??Players on the radar: Moyes was cleverly vague enough to declare that United would be looking at the best players by saying ai???this club is always interested in the best playersai???, when asked about the possibility of a return for Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford. Moyes has been coy so far on his preferences of new players, although United have made an official bid for Everton full back Leighton Baines which was rejected. It is difficult to gauge the players Moyes would be interested in signing. Ai??It looks like a second bid for Baines might be tabled, along with a move for Barcelona’s want-away midfielder Thiago Alcantara.
He has never had the kind of money at his disposal that he will at United and has little experience in managing stars. He has inherited a team of champions but it will be interesting to see if he can coax other big name players into joining him at Old Trafford.Ai??Nevertheless, Moyes seemed excited at being part of the huge managerial shuffle happening at the big clubs in the Premier League and hopes to ensure Manchester United retain the Premier League crown in his first season in charge. Such a result would certainly kick start the David Moyes era at Manchester United in the best possible light.
