With ten games left in the season, the race for the title may be all but over, but the same can hardly be said about the race for survival. If anything, QPRai??i??s win over Southampton this weekend has made things even tighter down at the bottom and realistically as many as seven teams remain involved in the relegation scrap.
Sunderland
Current Position: 14th (30 points)

Why They May Get Relegated?
Had this article been written on 19th January, Sunderland would not have featured in the list. A 3-2 win that day against Wigan ensured the Mackems were separated from the drop zone by 6 teams and 9 points. But since the win at DW Stadium, Martin Oai??i??Neillai??i??s men have been on a wretched run of five games without a victory which has saw the gap whittle down to 3 teams and 6 points. The worrying thing for the fans will be that apart from Arsenal ai??i?? that too at home ai??i?? all the other games were winnable on paper. One of the key reasons for the slump is surely the form of Steven Fletcher. After a rousing start to the season (5 goals in his first 4 league games), the Scotland international is going through a lean patch with the brace in the win at Wigan his only goals for the club in 11 games. Without Fletcher firing, one struggles to see where the goals necessary for survival will come from.
Why They May Escape?
Sunderland may not have been terrific this season, but the common consensus is that there are at least three worse teams than them in the division. While 40 points remain the traditional mark of survival, the lack of quality down at the bottom might well see that come to around 35. As long as the Black Cats ensure they donai??i??t lose to the teams below them in the table ai??i?? they have got trips to QPR, Newcastle and Aston Villa while Southampton will visit Stadium of Light in May ai??i?? relegation will be averted.
Key Man
With goals hard to come by, the pressure is on goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who has been at times outstanding this season, to deliver a few clean sheets to ease relegation woes.

Newcastle United

Why They May Get Relegated?
They really should not. The reason they are in this list is because their summer inactivity in the transfer market resulted in 21 points from their first 23 games of the season. However, lessons were learnt and injection of fresh blood in January in terms of a host of new signings have seen them rising steadily up the table. The defense, though, does remain a point of concern with Newcastle conceding 2 goals in all of their previous four home games ai??i?? two of which were against Reading and Southampton. With Demba Ba gone, an injury to Papiss CissAi?? can be a nightmare situation for Alan Pardew with the next best available option being Shola Ameobi. Newcastleai??i??s participation in the Europa League may act as hindrance especially since none of the teams around them have the grueling Thursday-Sunday schedule.
Why They May Escape?
It may be a brave statement to make after the debacle of 2008-09, but there is enough quality present in the Newcastle squad to avoid getting dragged into a relegation scrap. Among the new signings, Moussa Sissoko looks a class act already while both Mathieu Debuchy and Yoan Gouffran have bedded in to the team nicely. The return of Hatem Ben Arfa, arguably the most talented player in the squad, should add another bow to Newcastleai??i??s armoury. The fixture list is none too intimidating with only a trip to Etihad Stadium standing out as a daunting prospect.

While the new signings have made a positive impact, Yohan Cabaye remains the man who makes Newcastle tick with his goals and assists from the midfield.

Southampton

Why They May Get Relegated?
This weekend provided Southampton with an ideal opportunity to put some distance between them and the bottom three and move level on points with the duo from north-east mentioned above. But defeat at home to the bottom team QPR have got the Saints sweating over their survival chances. If they do get relegated in May, this result will undoubtedly be looked upon as a pivotal point in their season. Club owner Nicola Cortese took a big call by replacing the universally popular Nigel Adkins with a man new to these shores in Mauricio Pochettino and with the Saints winning one less point in the first six games under the Argentinean as compared to the last six games of Adkinsai??i?? reign, the decision has not yet been vindicated. The team has been shambolic in defense all season long and change in management has failed to bring about any signs of improvement with 11 conceded in the six matches under Pochettino. The fixture list too could have been kinder with the game against Reading being the only one in the last ten when Saints would face a team presently below them.
Why They May Escape?
It will be unfair on Pochettino to say the Saints have regressed under him. The ride till now has been quirky, to say the least, with their solitary win in the six games coming against champions Manchester City while their trip to Old Trafford saw them outplay their hosts for long stretches of the game.Ai?? Pochettino does seem to know the secret of inspiring his players to lift their games against the stronger oppositions and such a trait will stand him in good stead in the fixtures against Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham. Going forward they do possess a number of exciting options in the likes of Jay Rodriguez and Gaston Ramirez, which is something few of their relegation rivals can boast of.

Rickie Lambert has been the Saintsai??i?? top scorer this season with 12 goals, and has come up with vital strikes against Wigan, Aston Villa and QPR.
Verdict: Will probably just about escape relegation by the skin of their teeth.
Wigan
Current Position: 17th (24 points)

Why They May Get Relegated?
Because they are the ai???proudai??i?? owners of the worst defensive record in the league. Staggeringly, the Latics are yet to keep a clean sheet at DW Stadium in the league this season. This has resulted in them losing 8 games at home, 2 more than any other team. Quite clearly home comfort is something that Wigan will not be able to bank on in the run in.
Why They May Escape?
Well if practice makes perfect, then they should have no problem at all. Last season at the same stage they were 2 points worse off and sitting at the foot of the table with a fixture list featuring Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United and they still managed to stave off relegation comfortably. In contrast, this time around they have ai??i?? on paper, at least ai??i?? the easiest set of games among the teams around them. A final day showdown against Aston Villa may well hold the key to their chances of survival.

Like Lambert for Southampton, Arouna KonAi??Ai??with his goals is close to indispensible to Wigan.

Aston Villa

Why They May Get Relegated?
Aston Villa are one of only 7 teams to have been ever present in the top division since the inception of the Premier League. While they did flirt with relegation under David Oai??i??Leary in 2006 and under Alex McLeish last year, the situation has never seemed this dire. The days when Villa bore ambitions of Champions League are long gone and along with it has left the crA?me de la crA?me of that formidable squad. What remains is a bunch of youngsters, very much wet behind the ears, who one day may be good enough for the Premier League but are clearly not now. In this regard, the blame squarely lies at the feet of owner Randy Lerner who seems to have grown increasingly parsimonious over the years. By refusing to bolster the beleaguered squad even when faced with imminent threat of relegation, Lerner has pretty much nailed his colours to the mast. While he may have chosen financial prudence over immediate success (i.e. if avoiding relegation can be termed as success), only time will tell what impact this will have on the club on the longer term.
Why They May Escape?
While Villa has struggled for goals this season, their defense has been relatively frugal barring one catastrophic afternoon at the Stamford Bridge. They still have a few experienced heads in the dressing room and the likes of Charles Nai??i??Zogbia and Stephen Ireland must start pulling their weight if Villa are to survive. The fixture list is a bit of mixed bag but with games against 4 of the teams in this list remaining, Villaai??i??s fate is still very much in their own hands.
Key Man
It may start sounding repetitive but in-form strikers are like gold dust to the teams involved in the relegation dogfight and in Christian Benteke, Villa possess an absolute ingot.
Verdict: It will be close but Paul Lambert would do well to start preparing for a Championship campaign come next season.
Reading
Current Position: 19th (23 points)

Why They May Get Relegated?
Three defeats on the bounce and the things are looking quite bleak for Reading. Their defense is a major cause for concern with Reading failing to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League in 2013. Last time out at home they got trounced by fellow strugglers Wigan and defeats such as those seriously dent the survival chances of a team. There seems to be too many Championship players in that squad and hence it will not be a surprise to see them ply their trade at the same division soon enough.
Why They May Escape?
Games against West Brom and Chelsea have demonstrated that Reading do not know when they are beaten; so will they know when they are relegated? To put it more bluntly, Brian McDermottai??i??s men will probably fight tooth and nail till the end, no matter how desperate the situation is. Every once in a while in the PL, there seems to be a team who somehow manage to beat the drop against all odds. Think West Brom in 2004, think Portsmouth in 2006, think Wigan almost every year. If anyone can do it this time, the Royals look the most likely candidate.
Key Man
There are few better impact players than Adam le Fondre in the Premier League, a fact which fans of West Brom and Chelsea will grudgingly testify to.
Verdict: As thing stands, it is hard to see them escaping the drop.
QPR

Why They May Get Relegated?
Sitting at the bottom of the table with 10 matches to go is not a position from which too many teams have managed to stay on in the Premier League over the years. A disastrous start to the campaign ai??i?? 16 games without a win ai??i?? was always bound to take its toll and even since the arrival of Harry Redknapp, Rangers have found wins elusive to come by. Scoring goals has been a serious challenge for Rangers all season with their return of 21 goals being the worst in the division by quite some distance. With their last 3 fixtures being against Arsenal, Newcastle and Liverpool, if Rangers are not out of the bottom three before then, their fate will probably be sealed.
Why They May Escape?
With Harry Redknapp at helm, why not? At least that is something the media would want everyone to believe. But whether you like him or not, thereai??i??s no denying there are few better managers than old Harry when it comes to such relegation scraps. He somehow engineered Portsmouthai??i??s great escape back in 2006 and that too with a squad lot less equipped than the present outfit at Rangers. LoA?c RAi??my broke down early in his stint at the club but his goal against Southampton at the weekend goes to show how vital he can be in the next few weeks. Had they lost against Saints, their chances could have been well and truly written off. But they did not, hence hopes of Harry performing yet another Houdini act remains alive.

Unlike his counterpart at Villa, Tony Fernandez backed his manager to the hilt in the January transfer window and the big money splashed on the big man Chris Samba may still prove to be a profitable investment.
Verdict: They will battle hard but the chasm between them and safety may prove to be too wide to cross.
