Liverpool would be disappointed for not getting at least a point off their clash against City in the Boxing Day fixture. We look at which Liverpool players can improve to defeat Mourinho at Stamford Bridge for the first time.

Despite the loss, Liverpool will be determined to do well and will be high on morale.

Simon Mignolet’s questionable catching and distribution needs to go:
The goalkeeper who has already won the Liverpool supporters over is absolutely fantastic and has been the pick of the summer signings for the Reds. The Belgium has time and again put on inspiring performances and helped the club win matches, instead of drawing them. Ai??However, his howler against Negredo clearly showed everyone that he is not good at holding on the ball. Mignolet sure has amazing acrobatic skills and he has many a times used his legs and hands at full stretch to keep out the ball from hitting the back of the net. However, he somehow does not get a hold of the ball which results in rather stupid goals. Negredo’s goal was just a clear demonstration of that but this was already evident in Everton’s second goal against the club in the Merseyside derby. Mignolet was unable to hold on to Lukaku’s free kick, and kept it out by getting his fingers to it. However, the Everton players took advantage of it, and the Toffees were able to act on the rebound and Lukaku eventually scored that goal from inside the box.Ai??His distribution too is not the best, the goalkeeper not finding Liverpool players at the end of his long balls.
While the latter can be worked on over a period of time, Mignolet quickly needs to improve his catching skills as this might cost the Reds again against a very attacking Chelsea side. Chelsea have their squad filled with attacking players and they might be able to get the better of Mignolet’s weakness. While the Blues may not play in a style where the strikers play a very important role, however, they are more than capable of acting on the rebound from the goalkeeperai??i??s mistakes.
Philippe Coutinho’s finishing has to be improved:
The player dubbed as the ‘Brazilian Ferrari’ had an uninspired outing despite netting Liverpool’s solitary goal. Coutinho is a magical player who is pivotal to the Reds’ side but he can absolutely not continue with his dreary finishing. Liverpool should have had another goal scored by the 22 year old after the Reds did so well to build up that goal. The movement, the touches on the ball by the trio of Sterling, Suarez and Coutinho was fantastic. But Coutinho put in a meek effort to score. While many people called it a good Joe Hart save, the goal should have been scored by the Liverpool player. He should have done well enough to find the back of the net, with skill or with power.
Coutinho started jading in the second half and was rightly substituted by Victor Moses on the left flank. Coutinho is building up the reputation of being a 50-60 minute player and Liverpool can’t afford that, especially when Liverpool doesnai??i??t have much strength in the squad especially with the recent injuries and is up against Chelsea, a side which has so much strength in their squad. Coutinho needs to have the best 90 minutes of this campaign at Stamford Bridge for Liverpool to defeat Chelsea at their fortress.
Lucas has to put on an extraordinary show:
Lucas has had decent outings so far. He is not a player he was Ai??a couple of years back, rather he is a toned down version of the daunting character he was in the previous seasons where he gave a fantastic performances week in-week out. Right now, Lucas has good outings, decent enough, but will these average shows intimidate a threatening Chelsea side?
He can’t have just another ‘good’ game. Against a side which has so much strength in the midfield, Lucas will have to have the game of his life. If he is able to contain Mourinho’s choice midfielders, all of whom are absolutely world class, it will be a testament to his mentality and his determination to do well for his team. The Brazilian is most certainly capable of doing so. The defence and Lucas will need to press up high for the club to think about stopping the Chelsea side. Lucas will have Allen to work alongside, but the main responsibility of the Reds’ dominating the midfield and clinching the ball rests on the Brazilian’s shoulders.
