Manchester United and Chelsea don’t exactly see eye to eye on a lot of things ai??i?? not least of which is the ongoing saga featuring Wayne Rooney. “Will he or won’t he?” is the question of the hour, and one of many as Chelsea gear up for a visit to Old Trafford.
Two of our resident authors, Karan Yadav (KY) and Arjun SomAi?? (AS) met up for some pre-game banter. From the Rooney transfer saga to Mourinho’s return to Sir Alex’s long shadow, we transcribed what followed.
AS: So the Special One is back, eh? But I hope you guys are not in ai???Party like itai??i??s 2004ai??i?? mood. Surely you donai??i??t expect Jose Mourinho to have it as easy as he did back then?
KY: The man who shouldn’t have been fired in the first place is most definitely back. Things, however, are very different from the time he first took charge at Stamford Bridge in 2004. The team is different, the strategy is different and mostly importantly, the competition is different. Back in the day, Chelsea put together a team physically dominant team comprising of players in their prime, who decimated opponents by their machine-like efficiency. The team today is alarmingly young and is full of enormously gifted creative players, with their peak years still a couple of seasons away.
The landscape of the Premier League has also changed as Chelsea aren’t the only club capable of showcasing their financial muscle in the market. Jose Mourinho will look at the scenario and see an opportunity to re-establish Chelsea’s supremacy in England, but he is experienced and seasoned enough to not take the threat posed by the Manchester clubs lightly. But yes, it’s tougher to win the league today than it was in 2004.
AS: Chelsea bought Andre Schurrle in the summer and brought back Kevin De Bruyne. And now they have hijacked Willian from Spurs. Given the abundance of attacking midfielders at the club, how difficult will it be for Mourinho to keep all of them happy?
KY: As it stands, Chelsea have Hazard, Mata, Oscar, Schurrle, de Bruyne, Moses and Willian, i.e. 7 players for the attacking band of three behind the striker. Out of them Hazard, Schurrle, Willian and Moses are primarily direct players who would mostly be deployed out wide, while Mata, Oscar and de Bruyne are creative playmakers, who’d compete for the central position behind the striker. After Willian’s signing, it’s all but certain that Moses would leave the club, most likely on loan and Chelsea would have 6 players for 3 positions. Last season, there was enormous pressure on Mata, Oscar and Hazard as there were no replacements available of similar quality. That surely won’t be the case this season, and for a club that plays 60 games in a season, there will be opportunities for all of them.
Honestly speaking, the club could have done without the signing of Willian; the Brazilian is undoubtedly a talented footballer, as was witnessed by Chelsea fans when he almost single-handedly destroyed the team in the Champions League last season. However, there were other pressing needs and Chelsea had a bunch of top players with a similar skillset. The manner of this signing has certainly left me amused though. The player had completed his medical at Spurs and it is then that Roman Abramovich is believed to have called his friend, the owner of Anzhi. Many believe that ever since the Luca Modric episode, there is some bad blood between Daniel Levy and Roman Abramovich. Before Willian, Chelsea had swooped in to take Oscar from within Spurs’ grasps.Ai??Even Mourinho and Villas-Boas aren’t the best of friends either. Perhaps that phone call was made just to prevent the player from joining Spurs out of spite and nothing else!
AS: Sticking with the theme, is there any possibility of Juan Mata leaving in the last week of the transfer window? There have been murmurs all summer and now with such a large outlay on Willian, such a possibility ai??i?? as outrageous as it may appear to the fans ai??i?? surely canai??i??t be ruled out?
KY: I’ll be honest here: I have had a strange feeling about this for a while now, and the transfer of Willian hasn’t helped to allay my concerns at all. Jose Mourinho desperately wants Wayne Rooney, while Manchester United have been linked to lesser players than Mata throughout the window. Rooney is the face of Manchester United, and that has been the case for better part of the last decade. He is a global superstar; an icon of sorts. While Mata has been the best player at Chelsea for the last two seasons, is a fan favorite and darling of Stamford Bridge. So, if Chelsea want to take away the face of United, they might just have to give them their heart!
Jose Mourinho is a winner and his priority is to make this Chelsea team a better overall unit, so that they win the league and challenge the likes of Bayern, Madrid for the title. He has already stated that he prefers Oscar in a position that Mata occupies because of the Brazilian’s overall game (positional sense, defensive contribution, man marking, etc.) and rather, Mata would be played on the right as he wants a left-footed player on the right wing. Mata is clearly not as effective from wide as he is dictating play through the middle. So, if Mourinho feels that Rooney plus Willan for Mata and cash would make Chelsea stronger and more balanced, we might just see the unthinkable happen.
AS: What have you made of Chelseaai??i??s start to the season? They threatened to tear Hull to shreds before settling for a languorous stroll in the park in the second half of the game and against Villa they might have been slightly fortunate to come away with all three points. Surely with the players at their disposal and the so called Special One at the helm, they should be doing things with much more style and Ai??lan?
KY: I’m fairly satisfied with the start to the season. 2 games, 2 wins. It is still early days in the league and I know for a fact that Chelsea would have lost or down the Aston Villa game has it taken place last season. This young team has to be molded into winners and the start so far as been good in this regard. Championships are won by teams who are able to grind out wins on days they don’t deserve to. You being a Manchester United fan surely know this, don’t you?
Coming to the football, it has been jaw-dropping at times with the likes of Hazard and Oscar creating havoc in and around the box, but the team hasn’t been able to sustain it for the whole game – a fact which Mourinho also acknowledges. These guys have been tiring around the 60th minute mark and thus the need for players of similar quality. The defence has been fairly organized and even the central midfielders (Ramires particularly) have performed better than expected. The only chink in the armor is at centre-forward, where first Torres and then Ba have disappointed. Only when Lukaku has come on for the last 20-30 minutes, Chelsea seemed to have a genuine striker leading the line. Overall, I’m fairly satisfied with what I’ve seen thus far and expect the football to get better from here on.
AS: How important is Monday nightai??i??s match for Mourinho? While a draw may seem a good result on paper, surely there will be the temptation to try and go for a win and strike a debilitating blow to the fledgling reign of David Moyes?
KY: Any match against Manchester United is an important one. However, from the perspective of winning the league, it’s too early in the season for the result on Monday to matter all that much. Jose Mourinho started his first journey in England football in 2004 by defeating Manchester United at Stamford Bridge and surely, he’d like to start the second tenure with a similar result, which would give Chelsea a 6 point lead over the champions. I think Chelsea will start with the mentality to win the game, but Mourinho will reassess the situation in the second half as a draw wouldn’t be a bad result for the club at all.
Having been subjected to a barrage of questions with barely a moment’s respite, Karan now turns the tables on Arjun.
KY: Do you think Sir Alex Ferguson chose the best possible time to step away from the limelight? Although the club had just won the league, they weren’t the most balanced outfit and the Wayne Rooney situation wasn’t addressed properly. Has Ferguson’s departure, coupled with long-time CEO David Gill being replaced by Ed Westwood, left the club bereft of proper leadership? Ill-advised comments from David Moyes, lack of transfers, public relations strategy ai??i?? all point towards this direction.
AS: I think when you are talking about arguably the greatest managerial reign in the history of football, there was never going to be a ai???best possible timeai??i?? for it to end. In an ideal world, Sir Alex would have carried on forever and ever but that was never to be. I am sure whenever he would have left, there were bound to be thorny issues for the new manager to deal with. At a club of the stature of Manchester United, that will always be the case. There were talks that Sir Alex had decided that the season before last would have been his swansong but the fact the manner in which Manchester City won the title caused him to make a volte-face. Twelve months on, one may reasonable say, the picture is considerably rosier. Cityai??i??s ascension have been checked, there have been managerial changes at other top clubs as well and apart from Wayne Rooney, the dressing room seems happy and united. With that mind, this was as good a time as any for Sir Alex to walk away.
Having said that, I do agree with your assertion that David Gillai??i??s departure may have had an impact on the clubai??i??s dealings in the transfer market. For starters, there has been a discernible increase in transparency in transfer plans as compared to Ferguson and Gillai??i??s era. This, I believe, hasnai??i??t helped the cause as it has served only to bring to focus the clubai??i??s failures till now in this transfer window. Moyes and Woodward though will surely learn from their mistakes or rather they canai??i??t afford not to. And there are the likes of Ferguson and Gill to fall back on if they are in the need for advice.
By the way, a fan of a team managed by Mourinho, criticising ill-advised comments and PR gaffes by another manager? Now Iai??i??ve seen it all.
KY: What do you feel about the Wayne Rooney situation? Would it be better to encash on a player reluctant to play for the club or would you prefer hanging on to an unhappy player just to ensure that he doesn’t join the rival? What is the club more worried about ai??i?? losing Rooney the footballer or losing Rooney the face of Manchester United for the better part of the decade?
AS: You guys will just love to do a ai???van Persieai??i?? on us, wouldnai??i??t you? (For any reader who had spent the entire last season inside an isolated cave at the worldai??i??s end, I mean signing a rivalai??i??s star player and then watching that player fire your team to the title glory. Take it from a United fan, it is great fun!) Ai??Tell you what, if Chelsea had seriously offered Juan Mata plus A?10 million for Wayne Rooney, I would have been more than happy to drive him down to Stamford Bridge myself. But it seems now that the club has taken a firm stance that they simply will not enter into any sort of negotiations with Chelsea. Selling one of your best players to a direct rival ai??i?? doesnai??i??t matter the size of the transfer fee ai??i?? sends out a wrong message about your own status and Moyes and Woodward, relatively inexperienced they may be, do not want to start off their reign in such a controversial manner. I donai??i??t believe United are that much bothered about losing Rooney ai??i?? the face of the club, as you put it. As per reports, had silly money been on offer from one of the continental clubs, United were willing to cash in on a player who they feel is no longer indispensable to the cause. Itai??i??s just that Chelsea or any other domestic rival is a no-go.
Unitedai??i??s position is strengthened in this regard with the knowledge that Rooney, even if forced to stay against his own wishes, will still go out and burst a gut trying on the pitch. Itai??i??s just the nature of the man. Plus this being a World Cup year, Rooney will be determined to get to Brazil next summer on the back of a successful season. His cameo at Swansea showed us exactly that and while there might have been some hoopla in the media regarding his refusal to participate in the celebrations, I personally could not care less whether he puts a smile on that chubby face of his and jumps around a bit after every goal or not as long as he is giving it his best shot out there.
KY: David Moyes has hardly won anything in his life. How comfortable are you with the appointment? Don’t you think better candidates were available than him, who were better placed to do justice to a club of the stature of United than Moyes?
AS: There definitely were more stellar candidates available than Moyes, but would they have been a better fit in this situation for this club? I am not sure. You have to keep in mind this is a special club that you are talking about; a club where there is a certain way of doing things. Sir Alexai??i??s long reign has ensured that the club has retained some of the old school methods. This is a club that is steeped in British traditions and likes to celebrate graft more than glitz and glamour. From those perspectives, I challenge you to find a more suitable candidate than David Moyes.
Also, I believe, the clubai??i??s hands were forced once Ferguson himself recommended Moyes for the job. It would have taken nerves of steel for anyone to discard the opinion of a man, who had got so many calls right over two decades and to whom the club owes so much of its current standing, on a matter so pivotal for the future of the club. The decision may well smell of nepotism, as pointed out by various sections of the press, but then again it is possibly a good thing that Ferguson sees in Moyes much of his own traits that had made him so successful in this job. So for now, in Fergieai??i??s choice we trust.
KY: Having seen Manchester United begin with a solid performance against Swansea, how highly do you rate your team’s chances this season? The team is still short of central midfielders and any injury to Robin van Persie can dry up the goals for the club. Do you think, as things stand, United will be able to defend their title this season?
AS: I donai??i??t want to sound pessimistic, but I do have serious reservations about United successfully defending their title this season. I think on paper both City and Chelsea have got a stronger squad and this time around thereai??i??s no Fergie factor to bank on. It is unfair to expect Moyes to definitely deliver the league title this season and I think I am speaking on behalf of a majority of the fans in saying a top three finish in the league will be acceptable as long as the team does stay in the title race for much of the season.
But the funny thing in football is that you never know. These are after all the same players who won the league in a canter last season. Ai??Robin van Persie may not get injured after all, Marouane Fellaini and Luca Modric may arrive next week and come May, David Moyes will be lifting the Premier League trophy.
KY: Who according to you will be the key Chelsea players United have to be careful about, come Monday night? Which individual tactical battle (s) on the pitch holds the key in deciding the outcome of the match? What would be a satisfactory result for you?
AS: With regards to Chelsea, it really doesnai??i??t take a rocket scientist to figure out from where their most potent threat will come from. They are spoilt for choice when it comes to attacking midfielders and it is bound to be the same storyAi??on MondayAi??night. Juan Mata always seems to have a good game against United while personally I believe this will be a big season from Eden Hazard. It is imperative that the United midfielders sit deep and do not leave much space between them and the backline from where the likes of Mata and Hazard can wreak havoc. At the other of the pitch, it is simply all about Robin van Persie. He has caused Chelsea problems before and I hope it continues.
As far as a satisfactory result is concerned, I will settle for a draw. It is too early in the season for the result to have an impact on the ultimate destination of the title but United sure wouldnai??i??t want to fall six points behind Mourinhoai??i??s men even at this stage.
